Embracing Minimalism

As Jim and I prepare to move later this year, we have been clearing out our home with the intention to embrace a more minimalist lifestyle. We’re sort of trying on the concept in an attempt to feel unburdened when moving and for living with less stuff. Makes sense, since we move around like gypsies. We are either adventurous or insane, depending on your viewpoint.
Over the past six months, we’ve gotten rid of thousands of items, including: clothing, old art supplies, gadgets, tools, books, and much more. I made five piles: donations, freecycle, recycle, sell and trash. What a catharsis! What started out as a necessity has possibly turned into a new path in life.
Rockland Center for the Arts
Members’ Exhibition

The Rockland Center for the Arts (RoCA) is a wonderful art center in West Nyack, N.Y. I’ve attended several exhibitions and enjoyed work from professional artists, skilled hobbyists, faculty and students. This month I will be part of a members’ show. When I dropped off my painting, I got a sneak peek of some fascinating artwork.

The abstract piece in the photo will be in the show. While painting it, the name, “Mardi Gras” called to me in the middle of the process. I was feeling joyful and free at the time, and I think the imagery and bright colors reflect my mood. Even though I’ve never attended a New Orleans Mardi Gras, I somehow felt like I was picking up the vibe through the ethers.
My pop playlist while creating “Mardi Gras” includes the following artists: Taylor Swift, Meghan Trainor, Fergie, One Republic, Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, Magic and Pharrell Williams.

RoCA 2015 Members' Exhibition Opening Reception is
Sun., Jan.18, 2-5pm. (Snow date is Sun. Jan. 25.)
The exhibit runs until Feb. 15.
