Hibernia Highlights - June 2014

Post-Primary Accredited

Hibernia College is proud to announce that it has been accredited by the Teaching Council for a Professional Master of Education (PME) at post-primary level.  The accreditation was granted following review by a Teaching Council appointed panel chaired by Professor John Coolahan. The panel recommended accreditation be granted and commended ‘the pioneering initiative of the College in developing blended learning approaches to Initial Teacher Education in Ireland.’

The PME at Hibernia College consists of a sequence of modules that reflect the contemporary issues faced by post-primary teachers today and the skills and knowledge required of them in order to be  expert teachers who enable effective student learning.

The College will deliver  the PME programme in 15 subject areas: Gaeilge, English, Modern Languages,  History, Geography, CSPE, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Accounting, Business, Economics, Music and Agricultural Science. Beginning in September 2014, this new programme encourages experienced professionals to consider teaching as a profession  where ever they live.

The PME Post-Primary programme is enrolling now for September. To find out more, contact an enrolment advisor.

DIA Annual Conference

“Celebrate the past – Invent the future” was the theme of the 50th Drug Information Association’s (DIA) Annual Meeting.  One of the largest events in the pharmaceutical industry calendar, it brought together more than 7000 professionals involved in the discovery and development of pharmaceuticals and related medical products.

This conference took place in San Diego from 15th - 19th June and was a great opportunity for Hibernia College to present its suite of Master programmes in health sciences and introduce the selection of three new postgraduate certificate programmes (developed in cooperation with the DIA).  In addition to the exhibition booth, Jeremy Whitty (Hibernia College Course Director) was there to speak about the Post Graduate Education Needs from 2014 to 2025.

The majority of the conference attendees were from the US and were surprised to see an Irish college exhibiting.  This was however a great opportunity to increase brand awareness in one of the largest pharmaceuticals markets and sparked great interest from US students.

IRUPA Awards 2014

The 12th Annual Irish Rugby Union Players' Association (IRUPA) Awards sponsored by Hibernia College took place in the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Dublin on 7 May.
Andrew Trimble was voted Hibernia College Players’ Player of the Year 2014 by his fellow players and his success highlights the continuing need to design and provide flexible graduate and post-graduate programmes to meet the ever-changing needs of these individuals and their demanding lifestyles.
Dr Seán Rowland, President of Hibernia College, commented on the relationship between IRUPA and Hibernia College. “Hibernia College have formed a very strong relationship with IRUPA, providing scholarship opportunities to players through a combination of flexible online learning approaches  and internationally recognised academic programmes. It has been an excellent year for Irish rugby and Hibernia College students Andrew Trimble, Michael Swift, TJ Anderson and Tommy Bowe."

Davis Cup

Hibernia College were proud sponsors of the 2nd Round in Group II of the Davis Cup. The Europe/Africa zone was held in Castleknock Lawn Tennis Club, Dublin, in April.

James McGee, Daniel Glancy, James Cluskey and Hibernia College student Sam Barry were selected to represent Ireland to play Egypt for the home tie.  Garry Cahill was selected as Team Captain.

While on paper the Egyptian team outranked the Irish players, it was clear that the Irish team were serious about their task to avoid relegation, and this was proved when Ireland secured the victory on day three with McGee winning his second singles of the tie against the Egyptian No. 1 player Mohamed Safwat to secure Ireland’s place in Group II zone in 2015.

James McGee beat K Maamoun 6-0 6-3 6-2
Sam Barry lost to M Safwat  6-3 5-7 5-7 6-7(5)
James Cluskey & Sam Barry beat S Sabre & M Safwat  6-2 7-6(6) 6-2

Rowing Ireland

Rowing Ireland, the National Governing Body for rowing in Ireland, is delighted to be forming a close association with Hibernia College.  Rowing is one of the fastest-growing sports in Ireland, with 4,000 competitive members in 2014.

Historically, rowing has been one of Ireland’s most successful international sports, with several World Champions, Junior World Championship medals and U23 World Championship titles. This month, Sanita Puspure won a bronze medal at the 2014 European Championships, just losing to the current Olympic Champion by 0.3 seconds.

Rowing is a demanding sport that requires a high level of aerobic fitness. Elite rowers train between 14 and 16 times every week in order to succeed at international level. The training for rowing incorporates on-the-water training in boats, weight lifting, cycling and running. It can be difficult for elite rowers to combine such a demanding training regime, with 2-3 training sessions every day, with a traditional full-time college course or job.

For ambitious rowers who want to combine training at an elite level with furthering their long-term career prospects, a more flexible approach to college is ideal.

Any rowers who are interested in pursuing a course with Hibernia College can contact for more information.
