GNH Urban Agriculture Update:

On Friday, June 6th Gordon Neighbourhood House broke ground on the development of our new off-site Urban Farm located at 1209 Jervis St. (and Davie St.). Through the hard work of our dedicated volunteers, staff, the Out-of-School care program kids, the Nelson family, the Gordon Family, residents of the building and the talented folks at Shifting Growth, we transformed a courtyard full of invasive blackberry bushes and weeds into an off-site farm a few blocks away from Gordon Neighbourhood House.

The new GNH Farm site was made possible through the support of Gordon Nelson Inc., a local business that generously provided the site, materials and some people-power for the development of the new site. Residents of the building also now have plots in which they can grow food for themselves as well.

Also, when you’re at the Neighbourhood House don’t forget to check out our indoor planter on the second floor (Carrots, Onion). Thanks to a partnership with Corkit and with funding support from the Vancouver Foundation, our new project "Operation Cork" will have the preteen program participants using up-cycled wine cork to create more indoor planters.

We're also excited that the second grow season for our on-site Urban Farm (behind GNH) is well underway – we look forward to this year’s bounty.

If you’re interested in getting involved in any of our urban farming initiatives please email

An Update on the Clean Team

With new sponsorships secured and many days of caring completed, there’s been a lot going on with the Clean Team as of late! BEST Service Pros Janitorial Services recently donated brooms and dust-pans and Starbucks has offered to supply our corporate day of caring events with coffee on an ongoing basis.

We’ve recently hosted BMO and RBC for Vancouver Sun-United Way Days of Caring, and on April 16 Starbucks conducted a litter audit of the West End, with data indicating cigarette butts as 53% of all litter, paper products as 18 %, food packaging as 16 %, and drink containers as 7%.

In total, the program has logged a whopping 293 volunteer hours over the past few months in addition to the regular 24 staff hours per week spent cleaning and collecting data on the most litter heavy streets in the West End: Davie, Denman, and Robson. If you are interested in joining the Clean Team as a staff member or volunteer, or if you work for a small business or company and would like to coordinate a Community Day please contact Sam at
