JANUARY 2023

From Law Alumni Association President, Daniel S. Newman JD ’91

Dear Alumni:

I want to wish all of you a Happy New Year.  I hope everyone was able to take some time off to relax and spend quality time with family.

The University of Miami’s Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning held its annual conference last week in Orlando. Over 4,000 attendees participated and joined seminars from some of the most preeminent practitioners in the field. The University of Miami Estate Planning Office hosted a cocktail hour and your Law Alumni Association hosted a luncheon for alumni, where we honored Norman J. Benford with the Alumni Achievement Award. Norman taught tax to hundreds of students at the School of Law. Many of his students were present to honor his achievements and thank him for the impact he has had on their careers. Congratulations to Tina Portuondo, Executive Director of the Heckerling Institute, for the success of this prestigious gathering. The conference gave me an opportunity to connect with some of our distinguished alumni from across the country.

On January 23rd we will celebrate the retirement of United States Bankruptcy Court Judge A. Jay Cristol, a three-time alumnus of the University of Miami. Judge Cristol’s personal and professional accomplishments are remarkable and his dedication to family, country, community, and profession serve as an example for all of us to follow. Judge Cristol has left his imprint on the University of Miami for well over 50 years, having obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1958, his Juris Doctor in 1959, and his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 1997. He served as President of the University of Miami Law Alumni Association in 1985 and has remained an active Judicial Director since then. We cannot thank Judge Cristol enough for all he has done for the “U.”

Our community was saddened with the recent losses of Paul J. DiMare, a long-time member of the University of Miami’s Board of Trustees and ardent supporter of the University, and Miami-Dade County Clerk of Courts Harvey Ruvin. They have left their mark on our community, and we are thankful for all they have done.

In the coming months we will be announcing alumni events in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. We will also bring Dean Yellen to meet some of our distinguished alumni who practice outside of South Florida. We look forward to seeing you all at these events. In addition, we will be reaching out to seek your participation in our mentoring efforts. I encourage you all to mentor a law student, share your knowledge, and help them achieve their goals.

I look forward to seeing you all at an alumni event in the coming year and I welcome your involvement with the school.

Very truly yours,

Daniel S. Newman, JD '91

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As the new year begins, we thank you again for your continued generosity to the Law School. As we look around the Bass Bricks, we see the impact of your giving in the extraordinary vibrancy of this institution.

In 2022, we welcomed Dean David Yellen to the Law School and hosted countless events throughout the country, including in Orlando at the Florida Bar Annual Meeting and in Chicago at the ABA Annual Meeting. In November, we hosted successful and enjoyable Homecoming festivities. We came together to reminisce and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. There are so many achievements for us to take pride in at Miami Law. Our future is bright!

I invite you to join me by becoming a member of the Dean’s Circle or renewing your membership for this academic year, June 1, 2022-May 31, 2023, and to consider increasing your giving level.

Your generosity will help continue the school’s tradition of academic excellence. Your gift to the annual fund at any level makes a difference and is very much appreciated.

Looking ahead, you will have many opportunities to connect with the law school, our students, and your fellow Miami Law alumni and supporters. If you are visiting Miami from out of town, drop by the Law Alumni and Community Relations Office to say hello. We love meeting our graduates and learning about their work and achievements. Keep in touch and check our website often for upcoming events or if you’d like to learn more about how you can get involved.

May the New Year bring good health, peace, and joy to you and yours.
