Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth
November is National Runaway and Homeless Youth Awareness/Prevention Month.  Often fleeing violence, abuse, neglect or even hunger, homeless youth face additional trauma once out on their own.  As a result, they are more likely to experience substance abuse, early parenthood, impulsivity, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder; certainly all barriers to health, wellness, and productive lifestyles.
For FY15, the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) identified 309 homeless students with 24% doubled up with family or friends, 28% in motels, and 29% in shelters.
The remaining 16% are unsheltered, a stark rise from past years, which means living in cars, campers or camping in the forest.  Can you imagine a child climbing out of a tent or camper after a blustery night fighting the elements and then having a productive day at school?  Not to mention the impact hunger or family stress has on building friendships or having a positive outlook on their personal future.
Youth homelessness is a critical issue in our community and remains a path to instability, health disparities, and system dependence. So far this fiscal year, 177 have already been identified within FUSD, and final counts are predicted to exceed 400, one-hundred MORE than last year.
Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth (CCC&Y) encourages your support of the programs and services addressing the unique needs of this vulnerable population; warmth, shelter, food, counseling, assurance.  For a complete list of homeless providers and services or the direct contact information for the school Homeless Liaisons visit CCC&Y’s county-wide directory:
