LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
"We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women’s voices are heard and heeded, not overlooked and ignored." – Sheryl Sandberg
At National Women in Roofing, we are always focused on our mission of supporting and advancing the careers of women roofing professionals, whether on the roof or in the office. We do this continually through our four pillars of Recruitment, Networking, Education, and Mentoring, but we also look at other avenues that contribute to our mission.
Over the past few years, we’ve worked behind the scenes to provide educational and networking opportunities when we were all working from home, we’ve worked to create a DEI Committee and DEI Curriculum, we’ve created a WORLD Award to recognize both veteran and new leaders, we’ve created marketing to be used for recruitment, and we’ve brought insight to other organizations about the need for more women in our industry. These are all gigantic feats that our organization is proud of on a global level. We also have a continual desire and need to recognize the great things happening on an individual level.
One of the ways we love recognizing our members for their accomplishments is through the “Shaping Our Future” section of our newsletter. Anytime someone receives a promotion or recognition for something amazing, we want to shout it from the rooftops (pun intended)! If you, a friend, or a colleague receive an accolade, please share it with us. We would love to celebrate with you. The best way to get this information to us is by submitting online here.
If you see a colleague or coworker doing something great, make sure to tell them. You never know what impact your small gesture might have on someone else. To be true to my own challenge, I’ll start it off…my friend and colleague (and badass Communications Chair!) Liz Garza decided to better herself and set 5 goals for the month of June. These are all small goals, but they are designed to break through to the next level of her success. She’s sharing small bits of wisdom on her Tik Tok page, and inspiring others to do the same. Liz, you are an inspiration to me and so many others!
NWiR friends, now it’s your turn. Support someone, help someone, or just encourage someone. Make a difference in someone else’s life - no gesture is too small.

Welcome to PRIDE MONTH!
June is a month of celebration for the LGBTQ+ community. Last year we covered the history of Pride Month, but I urge each of you to look far past the rainbow parades and dive into why Pride exists today. The history of our rights hinges on a momentous event that happened on June 28th, 1969. That’s right… really not that long ago. As we move forward as a country and as a world, this month is celebrated as a way to remember the brave individuals that came before us and took a stand to be authentically themselves. Read more...

Oregon Supports Good Neighbor Center
ABC Roofing volunteered to do nate the labor and materials necessary to complete a new laundry room addition at the Good Neighbor Center in Tigard, Oregon. The Center provides shelter and resources for families experiencing housing insecurity – from food and clothing to cleaning supplies and furniture.
When the Home Builders Foundation solicited National Women in Roofing’s Oregon Council for contractors willing to assist, ABC stepped up to the challenge. The project consisted of 3-squares of built-up roofing, which tied into two existing roofs: one shingle roof and another built-up roof. Due to the small size of the project, there wasn’t room for guard rails, so the 3-person crew had to be fully harnessed and tied off while working. Read more...

Construction Camps for Girls and Young Women
- Ellen Thorp, M.A., CAE
Some really cool summer camps are popping up across the country for girls. Usually geared towards young women between the ages of 8-18 or so, these camps focus on various areas of construction skills and many of them include a roofing component. Oregon has the Girls Build summer camp series where girls attend for a week at a time and have four 80-minute workshops per day. Offered several times during the summer at various locations, they work on smaller projects throughout the week but also work one big project together.

Advancing Women in Roofing
Women in roofing ar e estimated to make up just about .5% of the entire roofing workforce in America. This figure is stark—and it shines a light on the tremendous opportunity within the industry to recruit talented women.
The past few years have introduced new initiatives aimed at encouraging women to join the roofing workforce in administrative, technical, sales, service, and manufacturing roles. Founded in 2016, the National Women in Roofing (NWiR) organization has made recruitment an area of focus, working to showcase prospects for women in the industry. Read more...

Moxy: The Voice of Women in Infrastructure
We are so fortunate at NWiR to have the support of several media outlets and educational resources on the interwebs that are focused on roofing and the broader construction industry. I recently had the chance to learn about a new resource that is of interest to NWiR members: Moxy. Moxy was founded by two women from the asphalt industry (which coincidentally has a lot of similarities to the roofing industry) and is a website full of articles about women, all the industries that fall under infrastructure, and the intersection between women and infrastructure. Follow them on social media and you’ll also see some roofing women popping up there in the next few months too!

Volunteers Needed in Northeast Ohio
One of our own NWiR members has stepped forward to replicate the Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls powered by the CSI Foundation, with a new location in Northeast Ohio. Shelly Higgins of NWiR and S-5 Metals is spearheading the project which involves many moving parts and pieces and NWiR is a proud sponsor of the camp. The camp will be held in Northeast Ohio using Mahoning County Career & Technical Center (MCCTC) as a base and will run from June 27 – July 1. She is joined by many other NWiR members from around the country. The camp has received most of the materials from the very generous manufacturers and suppliers in the construction industry. There are still some things needed such as lumber and flooring. If you would like to be a part of the experience, maybe you would be interested in building mock roofs for the various roof installations? Would you like to help precut and stage materials? Would you like to help instruct and mentor the campers? A cleanup crew is needed to tear it all down after the camp is complete. There are many ways to get involved, contact Shelly.

A New Gathering Place for NWiR Members
People who work for associations, like NWiR, NRCA, or IIBEC are in the profession of association management. We have professional associations for ourselves too: people like Alison LaValley, Brian Pallasch and myself belong to an association for association executives where we have colleagues who work for associations, we have community bulletin boards where we discuss hundreds of association issues, and we also have professional development and certifications. One of the hot topics over the past few years in association management forums has been a big shift in the way that members of associations communicate. Read more...
