September 2021 Newsletter

WOW, a month after NWIR Day 2021 and I still feel the buzz of the day.  New relationships, new communications, new ideas, catching up with old friends, hearing your voices, hearing from our sponsors…what a whirlwind day of excitement.  Even if you didn’t attend NWIR Day, the buzz is out there amongst others in your councils (or the establishment of new councils) as well as in your company and among colleagues. Take this opportunity to join us and take advantage of our networking, education, mentoring, and industry recruitment to help you grow within the industry and to mentor others too.
I would like to take this opportunity to give a special “shout out” thank you to our Executive Committee Co-Chair Jennifer Stone.  She is an amazing force to have had by my side (and now as Past-Chair she is still by my side).  Her passion and spark for NWIR and the industry can be seen in so many areas, and if you have ever spoken with her, you can feel it.  Jennifer thank you for everything you have done and continue to do.  More importantly, thank you for the friend you have become.  I hope you all take the opportunity to get to know as many women in NWIR as possible and make as many great connections as you can (life is like a box of chocolates and you never know who you are going to meet).  I have had great conversations with so many women on many business and personal topics, and I look forward to meeting more of you.
I know we just finished NWIR Day 2021, but SURPRISE we are already planning for NWIR Day 2022 in New Orleans on January 30th.   Plan ahead and get this on the calendar!  We would love to see you there.

NWiR Day Recap

As we all came together in Las Vegas, NV on August 8, 2021, for National Women in Roofing Day we celebrated women of our industry. For many of us it was our first time to travel since COVID-19 shut down travel nationwide in 2020. It was great to be together again, and even more exciting to be focusing on the topic of this year’s day- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The day kicked off with NWIR’s first TikTok station focusing on DEI with the hashtag #morethanjustalabel. The participants filled out forms describing themselves as more than just everyone assumes or perceives. We are incredibly excited to put this content out there. Many of you will be stars! If you have been part of a successful council startup, consider joining the NWIR Councils committee. We meet regularly with councils across the country who are looking for guidance and support to get their own local councils established. Your insight and wisdom will go a long way toward helping others find success. If you are interested, please contact the Councils Committee Chairs at

Here’s what some of our councils have been up to lately:

NWiR Dallas Fort Worth Council

Our DFW Council recently did a shoe drive for an organization called Soles4Souls. Our Community Service committee put this together and worked with everyone to get everything donated. Soles4Souls focuses on providing relief, fighting poverty, the planet and empowering women. They collect new and used shoes to distribute all over the U.S. and around the world. They help people launch and sustain small businesses selling shoes. They protect the environment from old shoes sitting in landfills. They aim to empower women by ensuring they have the opportunities and recognition they deserve. We could not be more thrilled with the outcome of this! Thank you to all who donated!

NWiR Seattle Council

NWiR Seattle Council partnered up with IKO for the annual RCAW Golf Tournament. It was the first time we had an all NWiR Team. Thank you to IKO for continually supporting our local council. We were able to bring new members together for a full day of networking and fun.

NWiR Denver Council

The Denver/Northern Colorado Council showed up in a big way at the annual Colorado Roofing Association Golf Outing. We fielded two full foursomes of members and sponsored one of the keg holes, allowing us to reach more than 250 people in the local roofing community. We look forward to continuing to work together with the CRA! Read more...

The state-of-the-art Riverview Branch Library in Riverview, Florida, won the first-place award for the commercial roofs category in ATAS International’s 2020 project of the year competition.

Roofing Is...240+32+20

NWiR Day 2021 by the numbers and the photos!  240 attendees, 32 speakers, 20 sessions … and countless connections, conversations, and insights. While the pandemic kept some of our members (and our speakers) at home, we nonetheless rallied and had a great time. The Executive Committee and the staff are poring over the surveys and we’ve already started planning for 2022 and roughed out the schedule. Save the date for January 30th in New Orleans!

To be recognized as a Woman of Outstanding Roofing Leadership Distinction is more than excelling at her roofing career objectives, the WORLD Award is about the whole woman: what she brings to her customers and colleagues, the women in her industry through her service to National Women in Roofing (NWIR) and her community…its about her professional and personal self.

2021 WORLD Award Veteran Winner

This year, especially with the challenges we faced with Covid-19, our 2021 WORLD Award veteran, Christine Mockenhaupt (SRS Distribution) excelled beautifully in all three areas. Out of a field of 7 phenomenal candidates from across the country through a blind review and voting process, Christine’s commitment to family, community, her career and our four (4) pillars (Education, Mentorship, Recruitment, and Networking) deemed her our most worthy recipient. From time to time we get great recommendations of books that have really resonated with our members. Education Sessions Recap at the IRE 2021

After NWiR Day, many NWiR members attended the International Roofing Expo. While attendance seemed down in the expo hall, there were some great education sessions that provide good information for roofing contractors and others in the roofing industry. I’d like to highlight a few that I thought were interesting for NWiR members. You can learn a lot just from reading the conference program as many of the speakers have links to their presentations and other reference materials. Read more...

Scholarship Experience

Breianna Dahl:

I’ve spent the last year and a half struggling with if I belong in the roofing industry and coming from a roofing family there was the constant nagging of imposter syndrome. Do I belong here? Am I qualified for my job? Is this what I should be doing? Am I doing enough? All of these thoughts have been nagging at me for the last year and a half, and a part of me worried that I would never find peace. Even while I was applying for the N.E.W.S Scholarship and finding out that I was picked as one of the winners, I struggled to believe that I could find a place in this industry. Read more...

Political Advocacy: Make Your Voice Be Heard

It is critical that women in the roofing industry make sure that their voices are heard on the issues that matter most to them. Whether it’s a regulation in your local area, a new amendment to the building codes, a bond issue in your school district or a piece of legislation in the U.S. Congress, we owe it to ourselves to make our opinion known. Back in the Spring of 2021, we did a video series on Roofing Day in D.C. with Teri Dorn and Deb Mazol (of the NRCA GR office) and used that as an example of one way to share your opinion with your Senators and Representatives in the U.S. Congress.
