LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
The idea of a New Year’s Resolution has always been a strange one for me.  Why should one certain day determine what the rest of the next 365 days look like? But with age comes wisdom, and I’ve personally learned that it's more of the idea, the goal, and the vision for the year than it is a giant “to-do” list to live with.

So, this year I’ve decided to focus on a theme for 2023: Honor. The textbook definition of honor as a verb is “to fulfill an obligation or keep an agreement”.  So, I plan on honoring my time, my health, my family, and my relationship with God. Or rather, I plan on keeping the agreements I make with myself, my family, and with God.

Your theme for 2023 could be totally different than mine, or maybe you don’t have a theme at all.  But let’s look at 2023 and what it has to offer to us, but more importantly, what we have to offer to ourselves and to the world.

I hope to see each and every one of you in Dallas on March 5th! It’s sure to be an amazing day packed with inspiration and fun. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so here.

Let’s make 2023 a year to be proud of!

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS

North America Virtual Council

Self Care & Seasonal Depression: A Two-Part Virtual Workshop

Each year, millions of people in the U.S. experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also called seasonal depression or the "winter blues."

The disorder is characterized by short periods of sadness or people not feeling like their usual selves, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. People may start to feel "down" when the days get shorter in the fall and winter but then feel better in the spring.

The holiday season can be stressful and in this two-part interactive webinar, we will discuss what seasonal depression is, ways self-care can help alleviate symptoms, along with statistics on mental health. There will be ample time for discussion and questions in a safe space - we look forward to seeing you! Register here...

INTER-INDUSTRY RELATIONS

Political Advocacy: Make Your Voice Be Heard

It is critical that women in the roofing industry make sure that their voices are heard on the issues that matter most to them. Whether it’s a regulation in your local area, a new amendment to the building codes, a bond issue in your school district, or a piece of legislation in the U.S. Congress, we owe it to ourselves to make our opinion known. Back in the Spring of 2021, we did a video series on Roofing Day in D.C. with Teri Dorn and Deb Mazol (of the NRCA Government Relations office) and used that as an example of one way to share your opinion with your Senators and Representatives in the U.S. Congress. Read more...

Roofs and Wind Load Design

“Roof design” is a powerful concept that is often misunderstood, misrepresented, or applied incorrectly in today’s industry. When it comes to roof design, the big question is, “Who is responsible for the roof design, or who is the responsible party?” Check out this information from IIBEC and learn more about wind load design for roof assemblies.

Construction Education Resource

NWiR is so fortunate to be supported by other not-for-profit associations, non-governmental organizations, and business coalitions. We seek these colleagues both in and outside the roofing industry, in adjacent industries, those that represent women in male-dominated fields, and those that we have issues in common with.  All the acronyms may look like alphabet soup, but these organizations offer free resources for education, industry information, and/or opportunities for women in male-dominated fields.

We are so proud of the technical education that NWiR offers. In addition, one of our industry colleagues, the National Association of Women in Construction has an awesome list of external sources for education. Check it out here.

CALL TO ACTION

Reroofing Market Index Survey on Q4 Activity Now Open

Roofing contractors and roof consultants are invited to take part in a Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing.

The purpose of the survey is to take the pulse of the reroofing industry on a quarterly basis and become a regular barometer of the industry’s business conditions. Industry professionals have an opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences regarding reroofing as a sector of their businesses.

The survey is an industrywide effort to collect information about the reroofing market spearheaded by a coalition of trade associations. In order to have accurate business forecasting and planning, your input is desperately needed! Only those who complete the survey will get access to the results. Roofing magazine published a nice summary of the Q3 2022 survey.

Take the Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing now. Survey responses may be submitted through January 20.
