April 2021 Newsletter

While it’s only April, I’m super excited about NWIR Day on August 8th in Las Vegas. As we do every year, we send out a request for submissions and I can’t tell you how exciting it is to see all of the submissions and great topics we have received (it’s like opening a present).  So many sponsors and members with such great topics who want to share and help empower you.

Now is a great time to look at those around you and make nominations for the World Award and Rising Star Award that will be announced at NWIR Day. Also, take a look at the N.E.W.S (Network of Educating Women Scholarship) Conference Attendee Program as we will be selecting 4 recipients this year to join us.

In the meantime, our Education Committee has put together a new series called Tech Talks. The next one is “All About Asphalt Shingles” on April 21st to learn the basics of asphalt shingles. This will be followed by a hands-on demonstration to learn how to install these shingles on May 20th. Be on the lookout for the next Tech Talk coming out soon.

If you are new to NWIR, please be sure to join the Stand Up Meeting for new members.  These are held on the third Monday of each month at 5pm ET.  This is a great way to introduce yourself to others, put a face with a name, and start making connections.  Look at the events calendar for more information.

We have a lot of great things ahead of us and I encourage you to join us. I look forward to seeing you in person at NWIR Day!

Let’s Celebrate Diversity Month

April is Celebrate Diversity Month – during this month we celebrate our differences and similarities. Diversity comes in all colors, shapes, forms and sizes; it doesn’t matter if you agree or understand diversity but what matters is your willingness to accept people for who they are and without judgment.

Here’s a challenge for April; find someone of a different race, religion, culture, gender or sexual orientation and engage with them. Learn about their diverse background and share yours, you’ll be surprised and find some similarities. Read more...

Wise Women in Roofing; Jennifer Stone

When you were starting out did you have a mentor, and if so was it, someone, you sought out or they found you?

I was not part of a formal mentorship program at really any job I have had. Starting in Roofing that would have been key to be able to have a mentorship program in place to lean on. I did however start to make friendships and alliances that grew into mentorship. Luckily I got hooked up with Heidi Ellsworth and Shari Carlozzi not long after I started in Commercial Roofing. We shared a common interest in helping women connect. Now, I will say I have many mentors within NWIR that help guide my thoughts and ideas, it is a beautiful thing. Read more...

Here’s what some of our councils have been up to lately:

NWiR Oklahoma Council

The Oklahoma Council of NWiR would like to thank everyone who attended our March meeting. Our speaker this month was Rachel Iverson of SFY. Rachel taught us how to take essential photos that support successful claim supplements. After our lunch and learn, we drove over to the new Tulsa branch of Crossroads Roofing Supply for an exclusive tour with Steve Lightfoot! We would like to thank Crossroads Roofing Supply for being our lunch sponsor. We can’t wait to see you at next month’s meeting!

NWiR Tampa Council

The NWIR Tampa Council recently got together for a good cause and a good time. We met at St Pete Axe and Ale for a little axe throwing! Enjoying a night out with friends and throwing axes was the stress relief we all needed. We collected business apparel to donate to Dress for Success which helps prepare disadvantaged women for job interviews through clothing donation and resume and interview preparation. When the woman gets the job they give her a week's worth of work clothes to get her started. They also continue to make a difference in the women’s lives with a professional group where the women can further their growth and help others. Dress for Success’ passion for making a difference in the lives of women is inspirational, and we were fortunate to support their work.

Roofing Associations Coalition Updates Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing

Roofing professionals are invited to join industry trade associations representing contractors, consultants and manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada in taking part in the new Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing.

The purpose of the survey is to take the pulse of the reroofing industry on a quarterly basis and become a regular barometer of the industry’s business conditions. Industry professionals have an opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences regarding reroofing as a sector of their businesses. The survey is an industry-wide effort to collect information about the reroofing market spearheaded by a coalition of trade associations, including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Chemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc., EPDM Roofing Association, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, Metal Construction Association, National Roofing Contractors Association, National Women in Roofing, Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.

Nearly 500 respondents completed the first version of the quarterly survey with an eight-question survey during a two-week period in January with more than three-quarters of responses coming from contractors, and balance coming from roof consultants. The results indicate the continued resilience of the industry in the face of a struggling economy and the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing is available at Survey responses may be submitted through April 16th.
