Miriam Marlier : One of three professors to receive inaugural Google research awards

David Wong and Alexander Hoffmann

Miriam Marlier, IDRE Board Member and assistant professor of environmental health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, is one of three UCLA professors to receive a $60,000 award from Google’s new research scholar program. Other UCLA recipients of the inaugural award include Kai-Wei Chang and Cho-Jui Hsieh, assistant professors of computer science at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.

The program was created to support early-career faculty working on cutting-edge research across many areas of study including machine learning, human-computer interaction, earth science and health.

Marlier, recognized for her team’s project, “Mapping California’s Compound Climate Hazards in Google Earth Engine,” will continue to focus on the intersection of environmental change and public health and on improving responses to natural disasters.

Mural pays respect to remains of women found near the U.S.-Mexico border

UCLA’s Maite Zubiaurre led the creation of an art installation and website honoring those who died at the US-Mexico Border.

The exhibit is part of a project called Mujer Migrante Memorial, a touring urban art installation and accompanying website created to memorialize female migrants and mourn their deaths in the southern Arizona border region, while raising awareness about migrant death in the U.S.–Mexico borderlands. The website includes poetry, background information, statistics and photos. There’s also a map that indicates the exact locations where remains were recovered; on the installation the individual crosses are coated with photography of these locations individualized to where each set of remains were found.

“It’s so horrifying that there are so many bodies found in the desert and that the wall is covered with so many crosses,” said Maite Zubiaurre, UCLA professor of European languages and transcultural studies and artist who signs as Filomena Cruz, who led the creation of the project.
