NZYC kicks off concert tour in Rotorua

Early next week the New Zealand Youth Choir (NZYC), under the direction of Music Director David Squire, begin their first week of intensive rehearsals in Rotorua. Not only will they perform their first concert for 2018 at St Luke’s Anglican Church, they will also participate in singing workshops at Rotorua’s Western Heights High School and perform under the geyser at Te Puia.

“Going out and connecting with the community more directly, more often, is a big goal for the choir this year”, says CEO Arne Herrmann. “This is part of a wider strategy to share our wonderful young singers’ talents, not only on a concert stage, but in places that would not normally be able to experience the beauty, fun and laughter of our choir. If we can contribute in some small way to inspire more people, young and old, then we have made a major achievement. Imagine if we could ignite a life-long love of singing, then that is amazing!”

NZYC will also feature at the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival with a free concert on Friday 16 February at 4.30pm against the beautiful backdrop of the Hamilton Gardens.

NZYC & The Graduate Choir join forces

To complete their first tour for 2018, NZYC joins with the wonderful, Auckland-based Graduate Choir on Saturday 17 Feb at Pitt Street Methodist Church. The two choirs will workshop some new pieces and sing together. We will either conclude the day with an open rehearsal or a public concert. Watch our facebook page for updates!

VOICES NZ record "Flowing Water"

Last weekend, VOICES recorded the soundtrack for Flowing Water, a theatrical event that will take place at the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival on 17 February. The choir is thrilled to take part in the creation of a new New Zealand work. Flowing Water tells the epic story of the Waikato River and all the peoples nurtured by the river – Māori, Pakeha and later migrants in a landmark production.

Flowing Water is going to be a dazzling musical drama with more than 70 live performers on stage - actors, dancers and Kapa Haka performers. Audio visual artwork builds the backdrop to the action on stage. The cast of soloists includes recent NZYC alumni Natasha Wilson and Anna Mahon!

Acclaimed writer Witi Ihimaera wraps his magic around the story of the mighty Waikato River – the story of New Zealand. The enchanting, mystical score is by Janet Jennings.
