What’s new in the Miami food scene?
We hope you’re hungry, because La Traila Barbecue is now officially open in Miami Lakes. The Texas BBQ spot quickly gained a cult following at pop-ups and events, and now guests can enjoy an expanded menu at a proper brick-and-mortar shop. Think prime smoked brisket, dino ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, cornbread … we dare you not to drool. There’s even a brisket sundae on the menu — just don’t tell your doctor. 😉
And in case you missed it, celebrated chef Michael Schwartz is bringing his pizza concept to Lincoln Road. This new outpost of Harry’s, which has multiple locations throughout the mainland, will feature beloved toppings like short rib and rock shrimp, along with new veggies and salads for the South Beach crowd.
Eaten anywhere good lately?
Sushi Yasu Tanaka continues to impress at MIA Market in the Design District. Our latest obsession is the tuna tasting, which offers six slices of heaven on a plate — all for a price that won’t break the bank. We’ve yet to encounter fresher fish elsewhere. The place is always slammed for good reason, so make sure to come at an off hour; Sushi Yasu Tanaka does not take reservations.
What’s a good neighborhood for day drinking?
With summer right around the corner, it’s important to stay cool. That’s why we suggest Downtown Miami for all your day drinking (and eating) needs. The neighborhood’s top bars are all within walking distance of one another, making it easy to pop in and out of the grueling South Florida heat.
Here’s a suggested itinerary to get you started: Kick things off at Over Under with some classic cocktails and a mouthwatering burger, head into Lost Boy for their beloved gin and tonic, grab a margarita and some tacos at Taqueria Hoja, and then finish up with beers and Yeti’s Pizza at Mama Tried. Soon enough, Jaguar Sun will even be added to the Downtown list again. The bar, which temporarily relocated to Little River due to COVID, is hoping to reopen at its original space within the next month.
What are some spots I can take dad for Father’s Day?
When we think of Father’s Day, one food comes to mind before all others: Steak. And two exceptional Miami places come to mind when we think of steak: EDGE Steak + Bar and Bourbon Steak. EDGE Steak +Bar is located inside Brickell’s Four Seasons Hotel, and it’s home to high-quality cuts like prime New York strip, wagyu churrasco and a monstrous 24-ounce porterhouse.
Over at Aventura’s Bourbon Steak, Dad can enjoy Japanese A5 striploin, Delmonico ribeye, and filet mignon. Both places also offer plenty of non-steak options, too, so there is something for everyone (including plant-based eaters).
What are some old favorites Miami Food Pug recently revisited?
With things slowly but surely getting back to normal, we’ve stopped by a few spots we hadn’t visited since the pandemic started. Miami’s Best Pizza — a South Miami must — still delivers a quality pie for a budget-friendly price. At True Loaf Bakery, the kouign-amann and chocolate babka were sorely missed and just as delicious as we remembered. And Sweet Dogs in Flagami still serves up one of the best hot dogs in town (as well as the best Oreo shake).
