🍔 White Castle makes an early arrival in Orlando

Happy Friday, y’all.

First things first, I’m kinda on a high today. Here’s why: For one, I scored free tickets to last night’s concert at The Plaza Live. I saw the Best in Brass: New Orleans Brass Band (say that three times fast) perform and got my N’awlins eating on from Voodoo Kitchen. Anyway, it was a dang good time. It’s been almost a year to the day since I last attended a concert (looking at you, Sanford Porchfest).

So if you’re looking for a good socially-distanced activity that makes you feel a little normal too, the weekly Front Porch Series happening at Plaza Live on Thursday nights is where it’s at. I can cosign that now that I’ve been.

Oh, and the other reason I’m riding high: Uncle Phil’s Fudge heard that I was talking about him yesterday and offered to bring me Key Lime Fudge. Whoever told him, thank you. From the bottom of this southern girl’s heart, I mean that. Perhaps I'll share my first bite with you over on IG Live next week because that's how the cool kids do it these days.

Bonus: If you can guess my all-time favorite southern movie (which has nothing to do with Key Lime pie, by the way, and everything to do with a movie set in the south in the 90s), I'll buy you your own serving of Key Lime Fudge. Just reply to this email and give it your best shot.

Thursday nights are for the Front Porch Series at The Plaza Live. | Wanna see your photo here? Tag either #pulptown or @pulptown on Instagram to be featured as our IG of the Day!

What Orlando is talking about

🚀 Everyone’s talking about yesterday’s landing of the Perseverance Rover on Mars. Did you see it? It only traveled 300 million miles from Florida to get to the red planet, no big deal. (Fox35

🛣 Winter Garden commissioners voted to ban big trucks from a local two-lane road, pushing truckers to find alternate routes, like Hancock Road in Clermont. And now Clermont officials want to protect their roads, too. (Orlando Sentinel

🚂 Kissimmee just got a little quieter. City officials have instituted a “quiet zone” between Donegan Avenue and Clay Street that will prohibit trains from blowing their horns during regular operations. (ClickOrlando

🔑State Attorney Monique Worrell is making changes to her office’s policies when it comes to jail time for defendants in hopes of slowing the spread of COVID-19 infections. Orange County Dr. Raul Pino said recently that jails were a “petri dish” for COVID. Assistant state attorneys will now look at the defendant’s age, BMI, and other health conditions prior to determining sentencing. (ClickOrlando

💉 The Orlando VA Medical Center in Lake Nona is hosting two COVID-19 vaccine walk-in drives today and tomorrow for eligible veterans. You just need to be over the age of 65 and have received care at the VA prior. (ClickOrlando)

🎬 The locally-produced documentary highlighting The Groveland Four is airing on WUCF at 9 tonight. It follows the story of the four Black men in Groveland, Florida who were wrongfully accused of rape in 1949.  (WUCF)

💪 Mayhem on Mills is back this weekend. I told you last week, but in case you forgot and nothing gets ya going like a good ol’ outdoor wrestling match, I don’t want you to miss your chance. (Orlando Weekly

🍔 In food news:

  • White Castle is launching a ghost kitchen prior to its Spring opening of its new brick-and-mortar near Disney. (Bungalower
  • Hinckley’s Meats debuted a new series of exotic meat to-go dinners. (Bungalower)
  • Mooby's, the fictional fast-food restaurant from the "Jay and Silent Bob" franchise, is coming to Orlando by way of a secret pop-up. Tickets go on sale next week. (Orlando Weekly

🎉 Winner, winner, chicken dinner

One more thing

Alright y’all, that’ll do it for today. If you have someone or something that deserves a shoutout on Monday’s podcast, slide into my DMs (for us old folks, replying to this email works great, too!) and tell me why I should tell our followers about them. And if there’s an event next week that I haven’t covered in the calendar above, let me know that, too.

See y’all in your earbuds on Monday and your inboxes on Tuesday!

P.S. If you were paying super close attention, yesterday I said I'd be sharing an interview today with my friend Dorsa from WOW Rolling where we'd talk about Orlando's skating scene. Well, I wanted you to know that I'm still gonna make good on my word but I'm doing it Tuesday. Cool? Cool. Cool, cool, cool. See you then!
