🤕 Steep gas prices and canceled flights mean headaches all across Florida

Plus, lawsuits over the state’s new voting restrictions receive the green light.

Welcome to Tuesday.

Hope everyone had a chance to enjoy Sunday’s sunset, one of several instances of great Miami weather from this past weekend. 😍

If you were unlucky enough to miss it, scroll on to check out the view — along with a roundup of the latest headlines — for yourself...

💧 What Miami is talking about

Sunday’s early evening sky was a sight to behold. 🌇 | Want to see your own picture in this space? Tag either #thenewtropic or @thenewtropic to be featured in our Instagram of the Day. (📸: @xplore_your_city)

✈️ The fallout from Southwest Airlines’ rash of flight cancellations was felt across South Florida. The airline canceled nearly 2,000 flights over the weekend, leaving some travelers stranded in the Sunshine State longer than they’d intended. Both Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were affected by the disruption. (CBS Miami)

Meanwhile, transportation isn’t looking any prettier — or cheaper — on the ground. As anyone who’s had to refill recently could tell you, Florida gas prices are the highest they’ve been in nearly a decade. According to numbers crunched by the American Automobile Association, last week’s state average of $3.17 per gallon is the highest price Florida has seen since October 2014. (Local 10)

🔎 Several Miami institutions may be receiving a steep fine from the Florida Department of Health. Documents published yesterday show that the agency is investigating more than 100 violations of the state law prohibiting so-called vaccine passports. In addition to big names like Live Nation and Starbucks, regional entities like the Miami Marlins and several South Florida concert venues are also under scrutiny. ⚖️ A series of legal challenges against Florida’s new voting restrictions are proceeding in court. Last week Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker determined that lawsuits over the state’s controversial SB 90 law plausibly argued that the new policies could end up disenfranchising voters. The judge wrote that the “plaintiffs’ allegations draw a straight, shameful line from the discriminatory laws of the 1880s to today. Whether plaintiffs can prove such a link is another matter. At this stage, however, these allegations will do.” (WLRN)
