😷 Florida’s new surgeon general is no fan of mask and vaccine mandates

Plus, state residents want better environmental protections and FPL is pushing for a price hike.

By Zach Schlein

Welcome to Wednesday.

It’s been a busy week in the tropics, what with Peter and Rose swirling about and Sam likely to form as well. We still have a while before a possible storm could be heading our way, but you can be sure that we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled eastward.

In the meantime, here’s what’s happening around Miami...

💧 What Miami is talking about

♻️ A new study has found that Floridians overwhelmingly want better protections for the environment. According to a statewide survey conducted by University of South Florida researchers last month, Sunshine State residents across party lines want the state government to take stronger measures in preserving the natural ecosystem. Per WLRN's piece on the study, “More than eight in 10 Floridians (85%) — including a large majority of both Republicans and Democrats — favored restrictions on the use of agricultural fertilizers, which are believed to contribute to red tide outbreaks.” Another interesting takeaway: “An overwhelming majority of respondents (89%) supported reforestation and three-quarters of respondents (76%) favored taxing corporations to lessen carbon emissions.” (WLRN)

🌊 On a related note, Surfrider Foundation’s Miami chapter is asking residents to speak out regarding a planned artificial reef in South Beach. The environmental org has concerns about the project’s permitting process and its potential impact on the area’s surf break. More information is available via Surfrider’s online petition and official website. 👀 (Surfrider Foundation via Instagram)

🗣 Florida’s new surgeon general shares the governor’s disdain for mask and vaccine mandates. Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Dr. Joseph Ladapo to the position yesterday to fill the vacancy being left by Dr. Scott Rivkees at the end of the month. During a press conference, Lapado said Florida is “done with fear” and will “completely reject fear as a way of making policies in public health.” (NBC 6 South Florida)

💡 There’s still an ongoing fight over FPL’s proposed price hikes. Earlier this week, attorneys for advocacy groups like Florida Rising argued that the energy company’s plan to raise rates by hundreds of millions of dollars through 2025 would place an unnecessary financial burden on state residents. Bradley Marshall, an attorney for Florida Rising, said under the current proposal, “residential and small business customers will be subsidizing the rates of large commercial and industrial customers by over $1 billion.” He added, “That’s hundreds of dollars per residential customer that they shouldn’t be paying in order to subsidize the rates of a few large companies.” (CBS Miami / News Service of Florida)

⛽️ Gas prices jumped by 10 cents in Florida last week, reaching a new high for 2021. The state’s current cost per gallon average is now $3.10, still below the national average of $3.19. Experts say the increase is due to ripple effects from Hurricane Ida. (WKMG
