⚾️ Kim Ng is a major league legend

Plus, a possible payday for Florida teachers and itinerary ideas for Easter weekend.

Happy Friday, Miami!

No, for real this time — you won’t find any April Fools’ degeneracy in this newsletter, at least not from us. 😛

Yesterday may not have been an all-day soak as some meteorologists predicted, but we’re not out of the proverbial woods just yet: Miami might be the site of some thunderstorms this afternoon. And those lows in the 60s that cold front’s supposed to bring? They might even be dropping into the 50s. ⛄️

But don’t worry: If there’s anything that’s known to keep Miamians warm, it’s carefully curated, lovingly written newsletters about local happenings. 🤗 You can cozy on up to some end-of-the-week goodness below…

💧 What Miami is talking about

An Instagram of the Day that’s both beautifully photographed AND relevant to the news of the day? We LOVE to see it folks. 😍 | Want to see your own picture in this space? Tag either #thenewtropic or @thenewtropic to be featured in our Instagram of the Day. (📸: @where_it_takes_you_)

⚾️ Kim Ng, the general manager of the Miami Marlins, was profiled by the Miami Herald just in time for the start of the 2021 MLB season. Ng spoke with writer Jordan McPherson about the three decades she’s spent immersed in professional baseball, her ambitions to preserve the team’s upward momentum, and her appreciation for the historic nature of her hiring. As detailed in the article, she’s “the first female general manager in MLB history and the first woman hired to a general manager position by any professional men’s sports team in North America’s major leagues.” Ng has also made history by being the first Asian American woman to serve in her role. However, her story starts long before she joined the Marlins’ ranks; trust us, it’s a much better read than anything you’ll see about loanDepot park. 😉 (Miami Herald)

💉 Florida is getting 800,000 additional COVID-19 vaccine doses next week. That number includes roughly 300,000 of the one-and-done Johnson & Johnson vaccine along with more than 500,000 in total of the Moderna and Pfizer shots. And just in time too: Yesterday Florida reported 6,790 new COVID-19 infections, the highest single-day total since March 2. Miami-Dade alone documented 1,578 new cases and 23 deaths. (Orlando Sentinel / Miami Herald)

💰 Gov. Ron DeSantis has proposed $1,000 bonuses for public school teachers and principals to be paid for with federal COVID-19 funds. The $216 million teacher bonus plan would be separate from the extra $3,000 the governor has said will be awarded to educators who complete a new state civics program. (NBC 6 South Florida / Orlando Sentinel)

🤕  Miami Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla has been accused of repeatedly poking and pushing a city employee during an after-hours party. The incident reportedly took place in February after Suzann Nicholson, the employee in question, was dispatched with police officers to investigate a late-night event operating past COVID-19 curfew without proper licensing or permits. Nicholson claims the commissioner was aggressive during their encounter and caused her to fall over, twist her left hip, and require subsequent physical therapy. Diaz de la Portilla has denied her claims. (Miami New Times)
