🏀 An iconic Miami Heat moment makes it to the big screen

Welcome to Wednesday, Miami.

We know it’s hump day, and we want to help you get over it with as light a lift as possible. Perhaps you could even stand to take a break by shutting off all of your gadgets and trying something new — this week is International Dark Sky Week, and the Tropical Audobon Society is hosting a free online webinar tonight at 6:30 p.m. to talk about light pollution, its impact on Florida wildlife, and how you can help.

It’s always good to develop constructive routines, especially when it concerns Florida’s natural wonders. And speaking of good routines, here’s your newsletter for today…

💧 What Miami is talking about

🕯️ Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings passed away yesterday following a years-long bout with pancreatic cancer. Hastings was serving his 15th term in the U.S. House of Representatives and had made history as a civil rights attorney before becoming the first Black man to serve as a federal judge in Florida. 🍻 With Miami-Dade’s pandemic curfew coming to a close and the ever-increasing availability of the COVID-19 vaccine, we’re sure many of you are eager to plan a romp to all of your favorite bars. Just in time for National Beer Day, here’s The Infatuation Miami’s roundup of the best bars around town including Mac’s Club Deuce and Lagniappe. (The Infatuation Miami)

🎶 A stretch of Northwest 14th Avenue in Liberty City has been renamed after legendary Miami soul singer Betty Wright. The rechristening took place on Monday to honor the late artist, who passed away last May at the age of 66. You can read a thoughtful remembrance of Wright’s multi-decade career, influence, and timeless songs at the following NPR link. ➡️ (NBC 6 South Florida / NPR Music)

🏀 In case you missed it, the trailer for the new Space Jam movie features a reference to one of the most iconic moments in Miami Heat history. You might recognize Lola Bunny’s celebratory stance — I’m a child of the ‘90s, how could I not remember these characters’ names? — as a recreation of Dwyane Wade’s iconic, arms outstretched moment as LeBron James dunked right behind him. Feelings about cynical nostalgic cash-ins aside, we’re always happy to see acknowledgments of Heat greatness on-screen. (Miami New Times)
