Your Monthly PAWS Volunteer Newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>

This month, we're starting off this newsletter with a staff bio of Mike Warner, one of our kennel asistants.

Mike is originally from Baltimore and he moved to State College after leaving the Marine Corps in 2010.  He went to Penn State to study Security Risk Analysis and Homeland Security but is unsure about what he wants to do.  He found PAWS because he was living by himself and wanted to get a dog.  Before he adopted a dog he wanted to learn about the dogs.  So he decided to become a dog care volunteer.  He ended up really enjoying volunteering here  and he adopted his dog Ella three months later.  Now, along with being a dog shift leader, he also does dog floor, pet partnering with Captain ‘Merica and Cheyanne, is part-time kennel staff and helps at fundraising events.  Mike likes getting to know the dogs and getting involved in everything going on.  He also really enjoys the comradery of hanging out with the volunteers at volunteer events.

Congratulations Ali!

Ali has logged over 2,000 hours which earns her a feature in the volunteer newsletter!  So we asked Ali a few questions about her time at PAWS and in Centre County.

How long have you been at PAWS? I have been volunteering for almost three years.

What's your favorite thing about PAWS? My favorite thing about PAWS is that the volunteers and staff see the best in every single dog. Certain dogs need extra socialization and training and they are able to get that at PAWS while they wait for their forever homes.

What's your favorite thing to do at PAWS? I love just walking the dogs and spending time with them.

What are your favorite non-PAWS hobbies? Hiking, especially with my foster dog Comet!

Where are you from? I'm from Scarsdale, New York.

How long have you lived in Centre County? I've lived in State College for six years.

Update on Herbie

Herbie is one of the few animals we have in a "permanent foster" situation. He went to the vet for a dental procedure one year ago and was found to be in renal failure. Euthanasia was presented as the best option, but anyone who knew Herbie, knew it was not his time. He did not have (and still has not had) any clinical symptoms of renal failure, so we decided to seek a second opinion and send him home on various medications, supplements, and fluids. Herbie definitely missed the memo that he was supposed to be fading away. He's been living it up and doing fantastic this past year. His foster family is wonderful, as seems to be the case with all of our long term fosters, and he's right at home. We will continue to keep Herbie happy, full of good food, and loved as long as we can. Thank you to our incredible fosters and volunteers for making stories like Herbie's possible.

Winter Dog Needs

Important Dog Needs! Because it is getting dark and cold, PAWS needs more flashlights (http://goo.gl/FTY5RE) and new Kuranda dog beds (https://goo.gl/2ZpLo8). With it getting dark earlier, our volunteers need more flashlights to walk our dogs safely. We also need about 10 x-large Kuranda beds for our dogs to lounge on at the shelter. These beds are chew-proof, comfortable and easy to clean.

Thanks in advance for any donations!

If you are ordering online for gifts for loved ones this holiday season and using Amazon, don't forget to sign into

Volunteers Wanted!

Community Volunteer Scheduler: Centre County PAWS works with all kinds of people who need to complete community service.  We need someone to help with responding and scheduling these requests.  If interested, please email Lisa Bahr at Lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org.

Adoption Counselors: We need more ACs on both the dog and cat side. Adoption Counselors process applications from the public and get to do lots of match making. They know our dogs and cats as well as all our adoption policies and procedures. If you are a Floor Volunteer and want to begin the process of shadowing to work up to Adoption Counseling, please talk with Lisa or an AC on your shift. We ask that you have been with PAWS for about 4 months before moving into this position. Adoption Counselors work very hard, but are paid in the form of success stories.

We Met Our Best Friend in October

36 cats were successfully adopted in October, bringing the year total to 475 placements
23 dogs were successfully adopted in October, bringing the year total to 260 placements

Pet Adoption Updates!

We love getting updates from our Alumni.  There's nothing more heartwarming than seeing former PAWS animals thriving in their forever homes!  Here are some of our favorite updates.
This past weekend..."we gave Starlight her furever home. She is playful and adorable and will fit right in! We love her!"
"Love our boy Basil (previously "Black Satin") from Centre County PAWS. He was the perfect addition to our family! <3"
After lazy day hanging out with his foster sister, Hermione Granger, Rudy wanted to stop by and say "Hi!" to all his friends at PAWS!
"Molly is doing very well. I noticed she is starting to smell because her weight is bringing her skin down in the litter box. I bought kitty wipes which is helping. She is a lot more vocal now when she is hungry and she continues to drink lots of water.

Overall its been a very smooth experience! She is eating well. Her stool looks healthy. I love having her around."
