The Shelter Scoop
April 2016 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

We've been doing some Spring Cleaning and looking at things we can change to make PAWS better.  One of the things we are changing is the types of food we're getting.  It's been many years since we went over to Royal Canin and in that time prices have gone up, up, up and discounts/services for us have gone down, down, down. So, we'll be moving to a fantastic food called Fromm. On first glace it may seem that Fromm is going to be more expensive, but it is actually going to be costing us a good amount less than Royal Canin, as we can get it with a discount and in bulk.  Added bonuses are that we will have a coupon for all adopters to get a free 2.5 pound (cat) or 5 pound (dog) bag from Wiscoy.  We will also have sample packets that we can send out with every adopter to use rather than having to fill up Ziploc bags!
Fromm has offered to come out and do a class/presentation on the food we will be feeding if it is of interest to us. This way, we can speak knowledgeably to adopters about the food we use. It would be scheduled for a time in the next couple of months.  Please bear with us as we make the transition!  If you have any questions please email Lisa (lisa_bahr@centrecountypaws.org).

I hope you enjoy this month's Volunteer Newsletter!

Mark Your Calendars:

Centre County PAWS is excited to once again be participating in Centre Gives, a 36-hour online giving event sponsored by Centre Foundation. This year's event will be held on May 3 & 4, 2016. During that time, donors can visit CentreGives.org to help PAWS raise funds that will further our mission. Last year your generous donations helped us raise $47,319.32 (total including matching funds and prizes) to help cats and dogs in need! With your support, we hope to raise even more this year!

Donations will be matched with $100,000 from Centre Foundation and will also make PAWS eligible for additional prize money. Thank you for your support!

Volunteer Appreciation Week!

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Centre County PAWS.  We want to sincerely let each and every one of you to know how much we appreciate what you do to help the dogs and cats of PAWS.  Volunteer Appreciation Week was last week and we hope you were able to make it to one of the great things we planned for you!

Bingo!

A big thanks to everyone who helped make our Spring Bingo such a success!  From the volunteers who help run the Bingo to those of you who came to play, we couldn't do it without you!  For the first time, we had a sell out crowd and we estimate that we made around ten thousand dollars!  See you at our next Bingo.

Volunteers Needed!

We are getting very close to summer break! That means we lose a lot of wonderful volunteers, so have to make sure our schedule is covered adequately. If you will be away for the summer, please make sure to email Lisa or Catherine. If we know you're only away for the summer, we won't accidentally archive your account. Also, if you are a regular on the schedule in Volgistics, but will not be here, we need to remove that listing. Conversely, if you WILL be here this summer and have more free time to devote to PAWS - summer is the time of year we need you most! If you have interest in serving as a regular on a shift, or even finding out more about becoming a Shift Leader, please let Lisa know. Last, if you are looking for a work study or internship opportunity, email Catherine. We still have one slot available.

Also we're getting some new trees and we will need 1-2 dedicated tree waterers. If interested contact Beverly (beverlyharader@gmail.com).

We met our new best friend in March!

36 cats were successfully adopted in March, bringing the year total to 112 placements
35 dogs were successfully adopted in March, bringing the year total to 83 placements

Just wanted to drop a note that Lily and Devon (coconut cream pie and pecan pie) have grown and expanded.  Their personalities have developed and they have turned into the sweetest cats I have ever met. Thank you for everything that PAWS, yourself and the staff have done.

Onyx is getting a long with everyone great. My fiance and I are obsessed and love him to death. Our parents both are also pretty obsessed with him! I think he gets more gifts on visits then we do. They now are making special trips to see just him!  We absolutely love him and Paws. We thank you for giving us this wonderful furkid he has filled this home with so much love and laughter.
Tinker and Belle are doing fabulously! They and the dogs are getting used to one another—still at a distance and separated by a puppy gate.  We are all having so much fun, too... They have so many toys now...  Both Belle and Tinker are such “love bugs”—each in their own way.  Both girls seek out being petted and love our sweet talk.  Both of them meow and purr back to me as I pet and “chat” with them.  They are such a joy!

Duke is a loving dog that does well with both people and other dogs.  He loves the dog park and really loves snuggling. He's a little nervous about new people at first, but he warms up very quickly.

Happy April Birthday!
