Your Monthly PAWS Volunteer Newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>

We want to take this opportunity to wish all of our volunteers a very Happy Holidays.
Whether
you're staying in State College or going somewhere, we wanted to let you know what we'll be up to at PAWS.

PAWS will be closed for two weeks
starting Monday, December 21st and reopening Sunday, January 3rd.  During this time, we try to get as many of our animals into holiday fosters as possible.  These are short term fosters, which is perfect for people who don't want to make a long term commitment or if you just want to give an animal a home for the holidays.  You can email cats@centrecountypaws.org or dogs@centrecountypaws.org if you are interested in making the holiday special for a PAWS' animal.

PAWS is also going to be able to work on some projects while we'll be closed.  First, we're building a wall in the Cattery.  This will allow us to give some of our less social cats separation and space.  The wall is also being paid for by a generous cat lover!

The shelter is getting gussied up for the holidays.  The floors will get their annual waxing and the lobby is getting painted!  Our lobby has had the same coat of paint since the building opened in 2007!  The paint is being donated by Sherwin-Williams!  Enjoy the newsletter and we hope to see you all at our Potluck!

Keep your Pets Safe This Winter

The American Veterinary Medical Association has some helpful tips on how to help your animal stay safe this winter.

Know the limits:  Just like people, pets’ cold tolerance can vary from pet to pet based on their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health. You will probably need to shorten your dog’s walks in very cold weather to protect you both from weather-associated health risks. Arthritic and elderly pets may have more difficulty walking on snow and ice and may be more prone to slipping and falling. Short-haired pets feel the cold faster because they have less protection, and short-legged pets may become cold faster because their bellies and bodies are more likely to come into contact with snow-covered ground. Pets with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, or hormonal imbalances (such as Cushing’s disease) may have a harder time regulating their body temperature, and may be more susceptible to problems from temperature extremes. The same goes for very young and very old pets.

Provide choices: Just like you, pets prefer comfortable sleeping places and may change their location based on their need for more or less warmth. Give them some safe options to allow them to vary their sleeping place to adjust to their needs.

Play dress-up: If your dog has a short coat or seems bothered by the cold weather, consider a sweater or dog coat. Have several on hand, so you can use a dry sweater or coat each time your dog goes outside. Wet sweaters or coats can actually make your dog colder. Some pet owners also use booties to protect their dog’s feet; if you choose to use them, make sure they fit properly.

Wipe down: During walks, your dog’s feet, legs and belly may pick up deicers, antifreeze, or other chemicals that could be toxic. When you get back inside, wipe down (or wash) your pet’s feet, legs and belly to remove these chemicals and reduce the risk that your dog will be poisoned after (s)he licks them off of his/her feet or fur.

Avoid ice: When walking your dog, stay away from frozen ponds, lakes and other water. You don’t know if the ice will support your dog’s weight, and if your dog breaks through the ice it could be deadly. And if this happens and you instinctively try to save your dog, both of your lives could be in jeopardy.

Pet Adoption Updates!

We love getting updates from our Alumni.  There's nothing more heartwarming than seeing former PAWS animals thriving in their forever homes!  Here are some of our favorite updates.

"Penny is doing very well. She adjusted very easily. She and our cat Samson took just a few short weeks to become best friends. Nightly, they bathe each other, and they play often.

She’s very much a lap cat as well. Attached is a picture of her ‘taking care’ of my husband who was sick recently. She wouldn’t leave his side!"
On Monday, December 5, Jersey and I celebrated our 8th anniversary together. I know everyone says this about their dog, but it's true - she's the sweetest dog ever!! Thanks, PAWS, for helping us find each other!
I just wanted to give you an update on Rosco. He is an amazing and wonderful dog. So incredibly loving. He melts my heart on a daily basis. J... He’s a treasure!!
"Our "little" Mitts soaking up some late fall sunshine. Formerly Butter Pecan, Mitts was adopted from PAWS back in June 2013. He was afraid of being held close to human faces at the time, displaying an overtly averse reaction when we tried to snuggle him under the chin, and we were told he was passed over for being "anti social." With some patience on our part, he turned that corner and is the snuggliest boy. He has the sweetest disposition and is my little shadow. He's 12lbs now, but compared to our large breed cat at 16lbs, we call him our Sweet Little Dude. So glad we trusted our instincts and welcomed this "little" guy into our home!"

Happy December Birthday
