THE GOSPELS OF THE GASH - THE ANNIHILVS NEWSLETTER
View this email in your browser
I begin this update with an apology. I have failed to maintain trust with many of you who have shown me support, and I'm sorry. There's nothing I can do about that, at least not by looking backward. It's been very obvious to me that my energy for handling certain responsibilities inherent in this endeavour has been in salient decline for some time now. I have struggled with depression since I was quite young, and I have not always understood the ways in which it manifests within me.
I have tried—occasionally, obviously, unsuccessfully—to push through this ailment and continue my activities, as I have long regarded them as the only purpose I have in my life.

As I have declined (increased) in age, the scope of my worldview has contracted. Gone are the days when I felt I had a calling, gone are the days when I thought I had some tangible ambition. There is no ambition, there is very little motivation. I don't want to give up, but I look around me and see that I may ultimately not have that choice. But... for now, I choose not to.
I keep saying this: Passion is a finite resource.
I want to keep going. I want to support younger artists (or my contemporaries) by putting their work into the world. I want to put great shows together and expose audiences to acts about whom they may not have otherwise known.

It's always been an uphill battle, for reasons both within and without. But, in an era when there is so much out there, it's become necessary to pay for the privilege of being heard.
I've had bad, or at least unsuccessful, experiences trying to work with people in PR. It's also absurd that someone at my particularly low-profile, DIY level of operation would even need to engage such a service. Yet, this is the age in which we live. Ironic that I have the ability to communicate directly with anyone in the world who may wish to do so, yet the wall of static is so high that I need to stand on other people's backs to get noticed.

The question is, would I find myself in a better state if this label were run efficiently and with efficacy? I don't blame the ubiquity of digital sales for the decline in my physical sales, in fact I made a conscious decision to limit the number of copies I produce because I have come to understand my place in this ecology. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to want to do what I do full time, but it is unreasonable to expect that it's just going to happen without a tremendous amount of effort. Now that I have time and freedom, I must work toward a real goal.

As Annihilvs creeps ever closer to its questionably momentous twentieth anniversary, the world brings new horrors with each day. After much back and forth, the decision was made not to fly anyone from Europe into this country to perform at Apex Fest. Meanwhile, I have questioned whether I even want to go ahead with the event at all. Plans are still in progress, I'm not quite ready to throw in that towel.

I think, ultimately, I am on an upward trajectory right now, mentally speaking. Now that I've moved ahead through the aftermath of leaving my job, with my financial situation at least temporarily out of the panic zone and my immediate future not nearly as anxiety-inducing (aside from the impending nuclear war and all the other great shit happening in the world), I fully intend to move forward on the various projects in front of me. As of now, the debut full-length by SIRE is in production, and will be on-hand later this month. All artwork and audio for the long-delayed SKINCAGE CD has been uploaded and will go into production in the coming weeks. THE HOLY CIRCLE full-length will go into production in early May. I have received the final unmastered tracks for the WORMS IN WOMEN AND CATTLE album, which will feature new artwork by Josh Yelle. Other releases on the 2017 roster WILL come.

THEOLOGIAN has just completed the score for Lovecraft's FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH sonnet cycle, to be released on vinyl by CADABRA RECORDS. We will immediately resume work on the next release, one of the most iconic Lovecraft tales ever.

It's been decided that Fade Kainer (STATIQBLOOM) will co-produce CONTRAPASSO, reuniting us as a creative team for the first time since 2015's PAIN OF THE SAINTS. The album already features contributions from FATHER MURPHY and Mories from GNAW THEIR TONGUES, and Derek Rush (COMPACTOR, CHTHONIC STREAMS) will also feature prominently.

I know that I have a lot of work to do, I know that I must dig deeper to push ahead. Please bear with me. i want to do this.

IN PRODUCTION NOW:

SIRE. EVOCATION OF THE SERPENT

In 2015, ANNIHILVS hosted SIRE at two events in NYC. As always, their frenetic, deviant ritual was punctuated by diminutive frontwoman GYNA BOOTLEG, whose performances have by now become legend. Brandishing religious icons and body fluids with equal menace, this paragon of perversion emits possessed growls and enraptured screeches, as the band maniacally delivers razor-sharp hymns of desecration.

We are exceptionally proud to present the debut full length by SIRE, an unholy admonition of eleven raw and abrasive litanies, writhing in viscera, chewing glass and asking for more with a spiteful grin.

The album is mastered by Ken "HiWatt" Marshall (SKINNY PUPPY), with artwork by Josh Yelle.

COMING LATER IN 2017:
APEX2017-999
THE HOLY CIRCLE. S/T

ANNIHILVS is very pleased to present the debut self-titled full-length by THE HOLY CIRCLE, a relatively new project formed by professor, writer, visual artist, and synthesis wünderkind Terence Hannum (LOCRIAN), featuring vocalist Erica Burgner-Hannum (UNLUCKY ATLAS/LOCRIAN), and drummer Nathan Jurgenson (SCREEN VINYL IMAGE).

The trio have previously released the Polaris one-sided 7inch on Anathemata Editions, which was followed by a limited cassette/digital EP from Accidental Guest Recordings. The forthcoming album was recorded in the summer of 2016 by J. Robbins (JAWBOX, CLUTCH), at Magpie Cage in Baltimore, and is being produced in an initial run of 300 digipak CDs.

While the phrase, “dark pop” is easily applied here, it doesn’t begin to describe the complexities of THE HOLY CIRCLE’s sound. At times, one feels as though this music could have come straight out of 1983, and at others, the forlorn keyboard strains and heartbreaking chorals are achingly modern. Existing beyond the constraints of designations such as “goth” or “synthwave,” while the sonic palette may be—broadly speaking—downtempo and sombre, THE HOLY CIRCLE defies simplistic genre definitions, projecting a numinous aura of pure light.

COMING SOON:

SKINCAGE. UNIMAGINED SPACE

SKINCAGE is Jon Ray, a purveyor of a unique brand of darkly ambient experimental soundtracks, often employing amplified found objects and handmade electro-acoustic instruments to construct epic pieces of bone-chilling bleakness. Following 2000's AXON, the amazing debut album on MALIGNANT RECORDS now-resurrected MALIGNANT ANTIBODY imprint, SKINCAGE sank further into obscurity until returning, seven years later, with the brilliant THINGS FALL APART, which was initially self-released and then reissued on Belgian label SPECTRE.

Now SKINCAGE returns, with a release both inspired by and dedicated to the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
Gaze through the window into a obscured mirror world, where flying creatures screech and squawk, held at bay only by the frantic sounds emanating from a lonely room in the attic.
Mastered by James Plotkin.
Digipak artwork by André Coelho (SEKTOR 304).
Booklet art by Josh Yelle (KINTAAN)
Co-released with MALIGNANT ANTIBODY.

NOW IN STOCK: RELEASED FRIDAY JANUARY 20

COMING SOON:

TELLADICTORIAN. PAINPUDDING

ANNIHILVS will be very proud to release PAINPUDDING, the debut CDEP by TELLADICTORIAN.

For the better part of the past decade, multi-disciplinary artist Nikki Telladictorian worked as one half of Pittsburgh-based industrial act PROMETHEUS BURNING, who released a series of increasingly fantastic albums ranging in style from hard-hitting rhythmic powernoise to retro electro-industrial inspired by late 80s/early 90s Wax Trax! era dance music.
With the dissolution of PROBURN, Nikki has not missed a beat.
As she says herself, "The Painpudding EP is the result of one live session, with all content being improvised in the moment. Hail to the dark dreams that become reality."

We present an unmastered preview of the EP's third and final track, BLOOD IN THE PUDDING, which originally appeared in an edited form on the POSSESSED HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMAN TRIBUTE VOL. 1 CD-R/digital release from PHANTASMA DISQUES.

COMING SOON:

SPETTRO FAMILY. RIO LAPIS

ANNIHILVS brought this Italian occult electronics maestro to the east coast in 2013, for a series of brilliant performances during Halloween weekend, for the first AUTUMN DIRGES MICRO-TOUR.
In 2015, we committed to a repress of RIO LAPIS, previously issued on cassette by BLACK HORIZONS.
This digipak CD-R edition will feature two new tracks included for this release, with all new photography by Gretchen Heinel.

"The thought had made his breath quick. He had anticipated this moment so keenly, planned with every wit he possessed this rending of the veil. In moments they would be here-the ones Kircher had called the Cenobites, theologians of the Order of the Gash. Summoned from their experiments in the higher reaches of pleasure, to bring their ageless heads into a world of rain and failure."

- Clive Barker, The Hellbound Heart
