Celebrate the day. Celebrate the week. Whatever, just celebrate.
I really, really like my birthday - especially as I inch past that 30-mark - and today just happens to be it. Every year, I make a big deal out of getting in a workout on this day because I take it as a symbolic way of setting the tone for the rest of my year. It's usually something I do by myself.
But this year, that workout isn't solo. At aSweatLife, we believe that everything is better with friends - including and especially birthdays. So, I asked friends to join me for a morning workout to start my year on a celebratory, birthday note.
When I started to think about what it was that I liked about the the day that marks that I'm getting older, I realized that it was two simple things: 1) I ask people to show up places and they say, "Yes." and 2) I spend the day, if you really think about it, celebrating that I'm simply alive.
But after a sweet surprise from some friends, I realize that you can have the feeling of a birthday whenever you want. Here's how.
1. Ask someone to show up for you.
I always talk about learning to ask for help, but an even more important piece of that is asking people to show up for me when I want it or need it. It could be a workout, a life event or even just a phone call. Human connection makes people happy. Happy people get out of bed in the morning and do what they need to do to conquer the world.
2. Celebrate that you're alive.
Take a minute to celebrate one thing every day. It could be a moment or an hour to celebrate that you're a human that's lucky enough to be alive. Maybe you did something great. Maybe you just got up today.
Go out there and act like it's your birthday today.
