A stronger role for science

The ISSC together with the International Council for Sciences (ICSU) provide international coordination and representation of science as part of the Scientific and Technological Community Major Group.

The ISSC and partners, along with Future Earth presented a statement which calls for a stronger role for science and technology in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and articulates responsibilities for the scientific community in the means of implementation and monitoring.
The second Ethnografilm Asia opened on June 13th in Thiruvananthapuram, India, with a selection of films from the second edition of the Ethnografilm Festival which took place earlier this year in Paris.

Building on the success of the first festival, the second edition in Asia is a collaboration with the Federation of Film Societies of India based in Thiruvananthapuram.
Next year will see the release of the World Social Science Report on inequality. In collaboration with Institute of Development Studies (IDS), the next report will serve, as with other reports, to put the social sciences at the centre of the discussion and debate on the growing inequalities that have become a hallmark of recent times.
In July, during Our Common Future Under Climate Change, the ISSC will be involved in a parallel session "Transforming Society and Science for Sustainability – Addressing Challenges in Transdisciplinary Research" focusing on our Transformations to Sustainability Programme. Seed grantees will give insights in co-designing and establishing inter- and transdisciplinary collaborative research projects.
The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR), a ten-year-programme, co-sponsored by the International Social Science Council (ISSC), International Council for Science (ICSU) and the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), are now inviting nominations for new members of the programme’s Science Committee. Deadline June 30.

Research Highlights

“A preliminary survey in ‘water-rich’ Kolkata and its fringes has revealed great inequity in water distribution. While the Kolkata Municipal Corporation supplies around 180 litre of filtered water supply per day to an average Kolkatan, pockets of population living along the east of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass have no access to potable water through a water filtration plant is now operational in their backyard.”

The survey is just one of 38 new emerging research networks that cover the full breadth of the social sciences, with a unique focus on social transformation needs and opportunities in specific social-ecological settings across the world.
The ISSC is launching a registry of contacts. We are building a pool of expertise that we will draw on to contribute to furthering our mission. The ISSC's suite of ongoing and future activities, including international policy processes, publications, reviewing proposals, participating in international committees require scientific expertise. And we want the social scientific community at large to join us.
