Wednesday, November 16, 2022: War and Peace: Poetry and Song Circle, 7 p.m.
November starts with the Day of the Dead, and then moves to Remembrance Day, a more somber Day of the Dead. Many of us who are oriented towards peace have very ambiguous feelings about this day. We want to respect heroism, bravery and sacrifice, particularly if we have relatives who died in war--yet we likely want to resist over-inflated claims for war, as epitomized in the claim that the First World War would be “the war to end all wars.” Not surprisingly, it was no such thing. And if getting a meaningful and spiritual attitude to external wars is complex, equally complex is dealing with our inner wars. Complete presence, complete individuation or enlightenment can be seen as the cessation of inner war, and we may get closer to this state as we get older, but not many of us, if we are utterly truthful, can claim to have arrived at such states. And what do we make of the fact that much art arises from the portrayal of external or internal conflict, that conflict seems somehow the dynamic that gets art moving, and that the arc from conflict to resolution seems built into at least the literary arts?
If you’re inspired by any aspect of these issues of war, conflict or peace, bring a poem, song or reading inspired by this focus. But, of course, as always, you are welcome to bring in something on a totally different topic, or just to come to listen and be nourished.
Facilitators: Hendrik de Pagter and Chris Bullock. Zoom host: Barry Hunt. Coordinator: Chris Bullock. Description copy editing: Hendrik de Pagter.
