#HeyEleanorChallenge: Embrace Technology

Last week, I had a meltdown.

I was over-worked and over-tired. And then, six months of scheduled social media posts magically evaporated from my Hootsuite account. You might not know exactly what that means, but let's just say it was probably 20 hours of work just gone. Buh-bye.

I cried.

I was so pissed, I couldn't bring myself to talk a cool down walk. I was so over everything, I even applied for a corporate job I wasn't even sure I wanted. This running your own business thing? It's too hard.

That night, I eventually got myself to workout. I had a beer. I spent the evening binge watching Transparent. The next day, I sat down at my computer and took a deep breath. Stupid social media was not going to keep me down. I mean, get real Molly. You're going to quit everything because a couple of stupid tweets got erased?

Don't be a baby.

I'd been meaning to streamline my social media process, write down the steps I take whenever I post something on Facebook or Twitter. You know, so one day I could maybe hire someone to do it for me. I never prioritized that task because I didn't have the time. Losing all my scheduled social media was the swift kick in the pants I needed.

Instead of settling back into my old routine, I decided to try something new.

I signed up for Buffer, another service that allows users to schedule their social media. It took me a few days to really get the hang of it, but I quickly realized that Buffer's scheduling method is waaaaay more efficient than Hootsuite. I'll probably save hours every month. And when you are working for yourself, that is a big friggin' deal.

Sometimes it takes the universe throwing an wrench in your plans for you to break out of your comfort zone. And when it comes to technology, I think we all resist change or learning something new. But often when you do, you realize, "Hey, this [app/website/whatever] is actually pretty awesome!"

Challenge #2:
Embrace a New Form of Technology.

Here's your mission:

1) Sign up/download a new form of technology
2) Snap photo of yourself using it (get creative)
3) Share on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #HeyEleanorChallenge
4) Smile, 'cause you just practiced living outside your comfort zone AND DAMN IS IT FUN!

Maybe you've been putting off signing up for Instagram, creating a newsletter (might I suggest MailChimp?), sending your first tweet or finally getting a Gmail account. Just try it. It could end up saving you tons of time in the long run... or just give you a confidence boost.

As an aside, I recently forced myself to use Snapchat, and while I am still getting the hang of it, it's actually pretty fun!

Know someone who's stuck in a rut and just might benefit from the #HeyEleanorChallenge? How 'bout you forward this email to them.

Looking forward to seeing what ya got. Until next week, here's to making every day an adventure.
