20th TCI Global Conference Bogota 2017

350 international delegates nurtured the future agendas of clusters in the 20th TCI Global Conference and enjoyed our 20th anniversary

More than 350 practitioners from cluster organisations, public agencies, industry and universities met in Bogota, Colombia to advance in the future of clusters through cross-country and cross-region collaboration.

Three intensive days with international keynote speakers, interactive workshop sessions and networking opportunities made the TCI Global Conference, once again, the reference event in the field of clusters and competitiveness.

TCI 2017 Bogota conference in numbers


Outstanding conference statistics: More than 350 participants from 44 countries. An important number of them were coming from Europe, even though the conference hosted also representatives from countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Japan or Korea who travelled to Bogota (Colombia) to network with cluster practitioners from all around the world.

20 years of TCI Network: The past, the present and the future of clusters 


As a special feature for the 20th TCI Global Conference and anniversary, participants were given a Commemorative Book that looks back to TCI's beginnings and reviews the evolution of the network with many highlights and anecdotes. If you want to download it, click here.

TCI2017: First-hand experience of the Bogota clusters

As on every TCI Global Conference, participants were offered a wide range of cluster tours and given the opportunity to get in close contact with clusters in Bogota.The day started off with an opening introduction given by Marco Llinás, Vice President for Competitiveness and Shared Value at Cámara de Comercio de Bogota.

TCI General Assembly 2017


TCI members met on 7 November for the 2017 General Assembly, during which the annual activity report was presented. Christian Ketels was re-elected President and a new member of the Board was elected, Prof. Geunwoo Ryu, from Keimyung University, who will be in charge of the TCI Asian Chapter. Danka Milojkovic, Cluster House - Serbia, was re-elected as a member of the Board of Directors and James Wilson, from Orkestra-Basque Institute of Competitiveness, was elected as Secretary of the Board of Directors

Toronto receives the torch to host TCI 2018


The official announcement of the city which will host the 21st TCI Global Conference 2018 was made during the passing of the torch ceremony in Bogota on 8 November 2017.

The Toronto representatives who received the flag were Dorinda So, Research Director at Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity in Toronto, Canada and Saad Usmani, Policy Analyst at Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity. The torch was passed by this year by organizer Marco Llinás, Vice President for Competitiveness and Shared Value at Camara de Comercio de Bogota.


Silvano Bertini winner of the TCI Network 20th Anniversary Essay Competition

Silvano Bertini, Head of Economic Development Policies Unit at Emilia-Romagna Region, is the winner of the TCI Network 20th Anniversary Essay Competition that took place for the 20th TCI anniversary celebration. The prize of the winner was a free registration to the 20th TCI Anniversary. Congratulations!

TCI European Conference 2018 in Sofia: Registration starts soon!



The conference website, registration and call for proposals will be officially opened the 1rst of December 2017. The first 18 registrations from different organizations will get the opportunity to feature for free their case or study in the special publication planned for the conference.

TCI Latin America sixth Webinar -  Perspectives of cluster initiatives in the world

On 22 November, cluster practitioners from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Spain participated in the sixth webinar of the new TCI Latin American Chapter series. The session focused on Perspectives of cluster initiatives in the world.

The cluster experts, James Wilson and Marco Llinás, talked about what's next for clusters and what are the trends in this topic for the economies of Latin America. You can consult the presentation here.


Clusters in Europe IV- 2017 Conference in Budapest, 30-1 December

Cluster Development Handbook  

The Hungarian Ministry for National Economy organizes the Clusters in Europe IV – 2017 international conference in Budapest, Hungary on 30 November - 1 December 2017. The fourth edition of the conference will serve as a great opportunity for national and regional authorities, policy makers and cluster practitioners to exchange experiences and best practices on clustering policies and for matchmaking.


Competitiveness Review Virtual Special Issue: Clusters at the crossroad between competitiveness of firms, industries and locations


The editors of Competitiveness Review have pulled together a selection of recent articles to help spread the knowledge on clusters to the community. The Competitiveness Review aims to be the leading platform for academic research and conceptual policy dialogue on the competitiveness of locations.
