From Now On by Robert Dekkers and Vanessa Thiessen for Dance Theatre of San Francisco's Fall Program (Oct 5-7) at Z Space

Robert Dekkers has teamed up with Vanessa Thiessen to recreate From Now On, with significant artistic contributions from the DTSF dancers. "From Now On is about the magnetic force of every individual and our shared ability to transform the world around us, one step at a time," Robert says.

The ballet was originally created for Diablo Ballet in 2017 and is inspired by H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man. It features an original score by Dennis Aman (Bay Area), and the music will be performed live by musical ensemble, The Living Earth Show (Travis Andrews and Andy Meyerson).

"Instead of trying to mimic the choreography of the original work," Robert explains, "Vanessa and I decided to focus on the essence of the work and recreate much of the choreography together with the DTSF dancers."

The company began working on it last month. "We began by asking each dancer to create two phrases, using a series of abstract paintings by Enrique Quintero that hang in the Berkeley Ballet Theater studios, one with their arms and torsos only, and the second with their legs only. We then combined these phrases in various ways, creating a shared vocabulary that the dancers then expanded into the solos, duets, and other group sections of the work."

Vanessa Thiessen, who works closely with Robert regularly, gave the dancers a number of creative challenges, such as building a moving puzzle that travels across the space, and making a phrase that travels along a pre-determined map outlined with elements including suspensions, sprints, and spirals. Together, Vanessa and Robert constructed the material using Oakland-based composer Dennis Aman's commissioned score for the work. They maintained the central "Walker" character of the original work but reimagined many of the other elements of the piece's form.

The eight dancers performing in the work are Christopher Dunn (Oakland Ballet), Landes Dixon (Oakland Ballet), Michael Wells (Diablo Ballet, Smuin Ballet), Calvin Thomas (Company C), Kelsey McFalls (Amy Seiwert’s Imagery), Alexis Borth (Complexions Contemporary Ballet), Sharon Kung (Oakland Ballet), and Jackie McConnell (Diablo Ballet, Post:Ballet).

This restaged version of From Now On will be presented in DTSF's Fall Program this October at Z Space.
