Get sweet!

• The first-ever St. Michaels (Md.) Chocolate Fest is the weekend of March 1-3, with the main event being a Saturday "Chocolate Crawl." Details.
• The weekend after that, on Sat., March 9, it's the 29th annual Rehoboth Beach (Del.) Chocolate Fest. Details.

make a Bird!

Decoy carving world champion Rich Smoker leads three classes at the Ward Museum in Salisbury, Md., March 15-17. The focus is shorebirds, and participants will make a bird a day, starting at the beginner level on Friday and moving up from there. Sign up for one day or all three. Details.

Harrington 150!

Harrington, Del. kicks off its 150th birthday festivies with a Victorian-themed Incorporation Day Dinner on Sat., March 23. Period garb encouraged. Hence, the helpful illustration! Details.

'rat feasts

• On Sat., March 2, the West Side firehouse in Bivalve, Md. (along the Nanticoke River in a remote stretch of Wicomico County) has its annual Muskrat Dinner. There are oysters involved as well. Details.
• On Sat., March 9, Elliotts Island, Md. has its Muskrat and Chicken Dinner at the pretty Methodist church there. (The island is 20 miles below Vienna in Dorchester County.) Details.

beer on ice

Some 17 different brews willl be featured at this beer bash on Sat., March 2 at the Centre Ice Rink in Harrington, Del. No ice skating, alas, but both keg curling and bumper cars on ice are a go! Details.

go hawaiian!

When the legendary Ash Wednesday Storm struck the Delaware coast on March 7, 1962, the Milton Theatre was showing an Elvis Presley flick, “Blue Hawaii.” They will be showing it again at a “Blue Hawaii Party” to mark the anniversary. Elvis/Hawaiian garb encouraged. Details.

Celebrate the arrival of spring at the Daffodil Festival in St. Michaels, Md. on the weekend of March 30-31. The town will be completely awash in blooms. There will be a parade, a hat contest, garden tours, a dog-costume contest, live music, and more. Details.

• The Shore Little League Oyster Roast at the town park in Exmore, Va. is coming up on Sat., March 2. Clams, BBQ, live music, too. Details.
• The Eastville, Va. Fire Company has its annual Oyster Roast at the local bingo hall on Fri., March 22. Clams, pulled pork, chowder, more. Details.


Life on the old Choptank River Lighthouse is be the subject a talk on Wed., March 6 in Cambridge, Md. Jack Messick, the son of the last live-aboard keeper at that light, will recall childhood days he spent working alongside his dad out on the river. Details.

No, not the golf thing. During Delmarva Heritage Days on the weekend of March 30-31 at the Delmarva Discovery Center in Pocomoke City, Md., you can meet and shoot the breeze with some of the region’s top decoy carvers while they go about their time-honored craft. Demonstrations and discussions are part of the deal, too. Details.

tubman day!

The anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s death is in March, and the Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center near Cambridge will be marking the occasion on Sat., March 10 with lots of events, including games and an art project; an actress talking about portraying Tubman; a documentary film about a historic local black community; and more. Details.


A famous Chinese puppet artist from the Zhangzhou Puppet Troupe will be performing on Mon., March 11 and Tue., March 12 in Holloway Hall on the campus of Salisbury (Md.) Unniversity. Details.

get gumbo!

A dozen or so different restaurants will be participating in the annual Gumbo Crawl in downtown Rehoboth Beach, Del. on Sat., March 2. Buy a ballot for just $10 and you can taste them all and vote for the winners. Details.

in the hunt

Always wanted to go hunting, but not sure where to start? A state-run “Mentored Hunt” weekend for beginners is coming up in Dorchester County, Md. on April 28-29. The deadline to apply is March 20. Details.

The Beans, Birds & Beer affair on Sat. March 9 in Lewes, Del. begins with a cup of joe and ends with a pint of beer. In between is one tour of birding hotspots at Cape Henlopen State Park and another tour (by boat) Delaware Bay. Sign on for one or both. Details.

Class act

Experts from the North Street Market in downtown Onancock, Va. will be teaching a series of four wine-tasting classes at the Oncancock School between March 21 and April 25--on sparkling wines, reds, chardonnnays, and pairing tricks. Sign up for one or all four. Details.

Back stories: DELMARVA History talks & EVENTS

• On Fri., March 8, the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society is throwing an opening-night party for its new exhibit, “Dig It: Unearthing Archaeological Treasures on the Shore.” Artifacts from famous locations like Ker Place and Eyreville are stars of the show. Details.
• “Pine Tar and Petticoats” is the title of a talk about fashions and other bits of material culture from the days of maritime Delaware. Sat., March 9 in Lewes. Details.
• The Laurel (Del.) Historical Society is holding a dinner event on Sat., March 16 at St. Philips Church where the featured speaker is the author of the book, “Historic Movie Theaters of Delaware.” Details.
• The library in Cape Charles, Va. will be “Celebrating the Culinary Traditions of the Eastern Shore” on Sun., March 24 with a presentation by Laura Vaughan, the director of the Barrier Islands Center, and Louise Orlando of the Bakery at Riverside. Details.
• Archaeologists and historians spent a whole bunch of time last year digging around at the Bayly House on High Street in Cambridge, Md. They will discuss their findings in a talk on Thurs., March 28 at the nearby Dorchester Center for the Arts. Details.

This year's edition of the Ocean City Film Festival, March 8-10, includes a documentary about the history of the local Beach Patrol and its lifeguards through the years. Details.

Go Japanese

There is a local take on the famous Cherry Blossom Festival held on four weekend days  starting March 16 in Rehoboth Beach, Del. Think Japanese street food, cultural activities, cosplay contests, and more. Details.

Two regional TV shows were kind enough to have me on the air recently.

• On WMDT-TV, I chatted with reporter Erica Murphy about the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman.

• On WBAL-TV, I got to tell a couple of fun stories from days gone by to Jimmy Hoppa and Lisa Bryant on their fun show, "Delmarva Life."
