If you can’t find something to look forward to at the National Folk Festival in Salisbury, Md. on the weekend of Sept. 6-8, well, you must not have seen the schedule yet. Here it is.

Please note this rule, however: While at Folk Fest, you MUST stop in the Vendor Marketplace tent and say hi to Jill Jasuta Photography and  the other regional artists who have worked so hard to be a part of this incredible event.

bring the noise

• Motorcyclists will flock to Ocean City, Md. for Bikeweek Sept. 12-15. Headliners are ZZ Top and Stone Temple Pilots. Details.
• The Thunder Over Dover extravaganza on the weekend of Sept. 14-15 has military flyovers, parachute demos, and a slew of historic planes to see. Details.


• Our historic skipjack fleet will gather in Cambridge, Md. for the second of its annual race events on the morning of Sat., Sept. 21. Starting gun should go off around 10am. Details.


• Two Eastern Shore beacons—one in Cambridge and one in St. Michaels—are on the agenda for the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge coming up Sept. 20-22. Basically, lighthouse aficionados from all over the country will be visiting 10 lighthouses and one lightship in a frantic road-tripping weekend. Details.


• The Brandywine Arts Festival on Sept 7-8 in Wilmington, Del. is often ranked among the top 100 shows of its kind in the country. Details.
• The Elkton, Md. Fall Fest, Sept 20-21, has music, vendors, kids’ activities, and more. Details.
• The downtown streets of Delaware’s capital will be closed for OctDoverFest on Sat., Sept. 28. Headliners are reggae’s The Wailers. Details.
• As part of the Dorchester Center for Arts Showcase on Sun., Sept. 22 along High Street in Cambridge, Md., Dorchester County will celebrate its 350th birthday. Details.
• You can tour the studios of about 20 artists in and around Lewes, Del. on Sat., Sept. 21. Details.

• 20-plus regional and national writers are part of the History Book Festival in Lewes, Del., Sept. 27-29. Details.
• The 1960s are the focus of Chautauqua presentations in Lewes, Del. Sept. 19-21. Re-enactors portraying Lyndon Johnson and Martin Luther King are on the bill. Details.


• Sample homemade sweetness at the annual Chocolate Tasting affair at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Del. on Sat., Sept 7. Details.
• The hard work of eating & drinking at the Birds, Brews, BBQ event at Cape Charles Brewing on Sat., Sept. 14 will benefit a fun & worthy cause, Birding Eastern Shore. Details.
• On Sat., Sept. 14, the Riverwalk Freedom Festival brings vendors, food trucks, music, a car show, and family fun to downtown Milford, Del. Details.
• This year’s edition of the Delaware Vegan Fest is Sat., Sept 21 at Glasgow Park in Newark. Details.
• In Chincoteague, Va., the Chili Chowder Cookoff & Car Show is Sat., Sept. 28. Details.
• The Southern Delaware Wine, Food, & Music Festival in Millsboro on Sat., Sept. 28 features the title attractions, plus a big Iron Chef-like competition, “Battle of the Sexes Chef Throwdown.” Details.
• One of the more pungent events of the year is the Rehoboth Beach (Del.) Garlic Festival, Sept. 27-28. Some great restaurants are participating. Details.

Head to Georgetown, Del. on Sat., Sept. 14 to enjoy Balloons Over Sussex, with mass ascensions, tethered passenger rides, kids’ activities, food trucks, and more. Details.

In a daylong event at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md. on Fri., Sept. 13, experts will discuss the history of the Dove, which is kinda sorta the Mayflower of Maryland. Expert boatbuilders at the museum are building a new replica of the vessel. Details.

Routes along the Broadkill River in Milton, Del. and Broad Creek near Laurel, Del. are on the agenda during Delmarva Paddling Weekend of Sept. 28-29. Details.

The Ladybug Festival in Milford, Del. on Sat., Sept. 21 will have 40 performers in multiple venues and outdoor stages—plus, it's free! A showcase for women in music, the lineup (including Hoochi Coochi, pictured here) looks just great. Details.

• Country music is front and center at the Berlin, Md. Small Town Throw Down on Sat., Sept. 7. Details.
• The Eastern Shore’s Own Art Center in Belle Haven, Va. is throwing a Craft Beer & Music Festival on Sat., Sept. 7. Details.
• The biggest day of the Chestertown Jazz Fest is Sat., Sept 14, with five performers lined up for shows outdoors in Wilmer Park. Details.
• Some of the country’s best polka bands are on the bill during Polkamotion by the Ocean, Sept. 11-14 in Rehoboth Beach, Del. Details.
• SoulTET and Swampland Blues, among others, will play at Groovefest near downtown Cambridge, Md. on Sat., Sept. 21. Details.
• The Freeman Stage in Selbyville, Del. will host its annual Arts & Jazz Festival on Sat., Sept. 14. Details.
• The Berlin (Md.) Fiddler’s Festival is a hugely popular annual affair coming up Sept. 20-22 in the downtown. Headline bluegrass act is Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers. Details.
• Folk music fans will want to head to little Hartly, Del., which is west of Dover along the backroads near the Maryland line. That’s the site of the 28th Annual Delmarva Folk Festival on Sept. 27-28. Details.
• The agenda at the Music & Soul Food Festival in and around Exmore, Va. Sept. 26-28 includes paddling trips and a film screening on top of the title attractions. Details.

The memory & talent of the late Kent County, Md. decoy-carving legend Charlie Joiner will be celebrated during a first-time decoy show at the fire hall in little Galena off of Route 301 on Sat., Sept. 7. Details.


• Talbot County, Md. celebrates its native son on Frederick Douglass Day on Sat., Sept. 28. Talks, performances, vendors, and more. Details.
• Historian John Muller has a trio of upcoming presentations associated with Douglass and the post-Civil-War era on the Eastern Shore: (1) a walking tour of Douglass sites in Cambridge, Md. on Sat., Sept. 21; (2) a talk in Salisbury, Md. on Sat., Sept. 21 about Douglass’s visits to the Lower Eastern Shore; and (3) a talk in Cambridge, Md. on Fri., Sept. 20 about Douglass’s godson, Rev. H.A. Monroe, publisher of the Eastern Shore’s only black newspaper.


• The talks and events of Emancipation Day at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center outside of Cambridge., Md. on Sat., Sept. 14 will mark the 170th anniversary of the first time Tubman tried to escape from slavery. Details.
• On Sat., Sept. 7, dignitaries from various African nations will be visiting Cambridge, Md. for a “Day of Resilience” to mark the 400th anniversary of the start of slavery on these shores. There will be a ribbon-cutting for the town’s spectacular new Tubman mural as well. Details.

• The 42nd annual Nanticoke Indian Powwow is the weekend of Sept. 7-8 in Millsboro, Del. Details.
• A Native American Festival on Sept. 14-15 in Vienna, Md. celebrates the heritage of the Nause Waiwash. Details.

speaking of Tubman & Douglass ...

Hey, what if somebody wrote a book that tells the inspiring stories of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass in engaging fashion while encouraging people to get out and follow in the footsteps of these first-rate American heroes, as well as in the footsteps of a number of other, lesser-known heroes of the Underground Railroad here on the Delmarva Peninsula?

Maybe it would be called something like:
"Tubman Travels: 32 Underground Railroad Journeys on Delmarva."
