The trips are evenly divided among upper, middle, and lower Delmarva. There are excursions into sweet small towns, along the backroads, out to remote islands, and through the beach resorts. Lots and lots of fun stories from days gone by!


The last of the old sailing bugeyes—the newly restored Edna Lockwood—will be visiting her former home port of Cambridge, Md. on the weekend of Aug. 2-4. Built on Tilghman Island, she is celebrating her 130th birthday this year. Details.

This year’s edition of the Great Chesapeake Bay Balloon Festival is the weekend of Aug. 2-4 at Triple Creek Winery, in the countryside northeast of Easton, Md. Details, including balloon-ride reservations.

The BEST FESTS: Pirates, Block parties, & More

• The big Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend is back in Rock Hall, Md. on the weekend of Aug. 9-11. Details.
• The Lotus Blossom Art & Nature Fest at Mount Harmon Plantation in Earleville, on Maryland's Upper Shore, is Sat., Aug. 10. Nature-inspired art, plus wagon rides, historical re-enactors, bluegrass, and more. Details.
• Caroline Summerfest is a big ol’ block party with lots of music in downtown Denton, Md. on the weekend of Aug. 16-17. Details.
• Harrington (Del.) Heritage Day on Sat., Aug. 24 starts with a 9am parade and runs clear through a block party, a movie, and a fireworks show Details.


Incredibly, the "August Quarterly" dates clear back to 1812 and ranks as the oldest still-going celebration of African American culture in the country. The photo here is from the 1930s.

This year’s edition of the event is the weekend of Aug. 24-25 at Tubman-Garrett Park in Wilmington, Del.—music, crafts, storytelling, more. Details.

The annual Eastern Shore Threshermen’s Association show on the weekend of Aug. 2-4 brings old steam and gas engines to life along the backroads of Caroline County, Md., near Federalsburg. Details.

• The Great Pocomoke Fair returns Aug. 1-3 at the fairgrounds in Pocomoke City, Md. Details.
• The combined Caroline-Dorchester County Fair runs Aug 7-10 at the Caroline County 4-H Park near Denton, Md. Details.
• The Wicomico County Fair (pictured, in a promotional photo from back in the day) is Aug. 16-18 at the Winterpark Place in Salisbury, Md. Details. 
• The Queen Anne’s County Fair runs Aug. 12-17 at the 4-H Park west of Centreville, Md. Details.

• The Middletown (Del.) Olde Tyme Peach Festival is a humongous downtown block party on Sat., Aug. 17. We are talking 25,000+ attendees in recent years. Details.
• The Wyoming (Del.) Peach Festival is more of a sweet small-town affair. Sat., Aug. 3. Details.
• The Peach Festival in Berlin, Md. takes place on the grounds at the Taylor House Museum. Sat., Aug. 3. Details.
• The Sudlersville (Md.) Peach Festival at Godfrey’s Farm just west of town is also on Sat., Aug. 3. Details.
• Milburn Orchards in Elkton, Md. has its annual Peach Party Weekend on Aug. 3-4. Details.
• Fifer Orchards in Camden-Wyoming, Del. celebrates Peach Ice Cream Day on Sat., Aug. 10. A bunch of fun kids’ activities are part of the deal. Details.
• The Peach Festival on Sat., Aug. 10 at firehouse in Preston, Md. features lots of real food, too—chicken dinner, scrapple sandwiches, and more. Details.
• The little Antioch Peach Festival on Sat., Aug. 10 is at a church on the backroads outside of Cambridge, Md. Details.

On Fri., Aug. 9, the NASA Wallops space station will be breaking out the big telescopes to help you gawk at the Perseid Meteor Shower from Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Assateague, Va. Details.


In Dewey Beach, Del., the Summer Vibes Fest that runs between Aug. 9 and 17 is a celebration of the subcultures of skimboarding & skateboarding. Music & art in addition to lots of competitions. Details.

The Delaware Taco Festival on Sat., Aug. 17 will be on the riverfront in downtown Wilmington at Tubman Garrett Park. 25-plus taco vendors, a churro bar, tequila & margaritas, live music, kids' fun zone, & more. Details.


During Art Rocks the Inns in Cape Charles, Va. on Sun., Aug 18, you can tour historic homes that now serve as small inns while checking out the work of local artists whose work is shown on porches. Details.

More than 10,000 people have attended the big Dover (Del.) Comic Con in recent years. It’s coming up again on Sat., Aug. 17. Artists, vendors, gaming, much more. Details.


For 151(!) years now, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cordova, Md. has been running an annual Jousting Tournament and Horse Show. This year’s edition is Wed., Aug. 7. Details.

• The annual “Dead on the Vine” affair at Chatham Vineyards in Machipongo, Va. on Sat., Aug. 3 includes a catered dinner and a Grateful Dead tribute band. Details.
• More than 15 bands will be playing at the Riverfront Blues Festival in downtown Wilmington, Del. on the weekend of Aug. 3-4. Details.
• Gospel, soul, and steel drums are on the bill at the Eastern Shore AFRAM Festival in Seaford, Del. on Sat., Aug. 10. Details.
• The Chamber Music by the Sea Festival (lower left) in Berlin and Snow Hill, Md. features intimate concerts at churches, in libraries, and even in local homes. Aug. 11-17. Details.

• At an Ice Cream Social on Sat., Aug. 10, the Preston (Md.) Historical Society will cut the ribbon on two new exhibits, one on period furnishings and the other made up of old farm equipment. Details.
• At the Indian River Life-Saving Station near Rehoboth Beach, Del., they will be re-enacting an old-school breeches-buoy shipwreck rescue (pictured) on Thurs., Aug. 15. Details.

Chalk A walk

Artists and amateurs alike will be spreading good vibes through the magic of sidewalk chalk at the Chalk the Walks event in Elkton, Md. on Tue., Aug. 20. Details.

Gettin' fishY

• This year will be the 46th time around for the famous White Marlin Open fishing tournament in Ocean City, Md. Fiftysome boats went out the very first year. Nearly 400 went out last year. This year's dates are Aug. 5-9 Details.
• The Poor Girls Open is a ladies-only billfish tournament in Ocean City, Md. that runs from Aug. 15 to 17 and raises money for breast cancer research. Details.

The End of Summer Bash at the Delaware Children’s Museum in Wilmington on Fri., Aug. 16 involves exploding sidewalk chalk, spewing soda geysers, tiki mask-making, a giant Earth Balloon, and steel-drum music. Details.


• A Crab Feast & Music Festival is planned for Sat., Aug. 3 at the KOA Campground in Chincotague, Va. Details.
• Happy 40th anniversary to the Seafood Feast-i-Val, an all-you-can-eat affair on Sat., Aug. 10 on the waterfront in Cambridge, Md. Details.
• Watermen’s Appreciation Day at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md. is Sun., Aug. 11. Boat docking and music. Steamed crabs served by local watermen. Details.
• This year’s edition of Crab Crackin’ feast at historic Ker Place in Onancock, Va. is coming up on Sat., Aug. 17. Details.

• Plein air painters will be setting up in Ocean City, Md. for the Artists Paint OC competition, Aug. 7-11. Lots of public events, too. Details.
