Technician Commitment:
One Year In

The Science Council and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Technicians Make It Happen campaign hosted a prestigious event at the Tower of London on 6 November to mark one year since the launch of the Technician Commitment. As a founding signatory of the Commitment, Imperial was presented with a commemorative plaque in recognition of its exceptional progress to date. Attending on behalf of the College were Lindsay Comalie (Learning and Development Centre), Allison Hunter (Department of Life Sciences) and Alastair James (Advancement).

The Technician Commitment is a university and research institution initiative which aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technical staff. At the Tower of London event, publication of a report laying out the campaign’s key actions to date was announced. Lord Sainsbury, Settlor of Gatsby, said that what had been achieved so far had “exceeded all expectations”. Download the Technician Commitment: One year in report here.

An inspiring new video on the campaign was also unveiled.

Imperial's Animal Technicians Recognised by Prestigious Accreditation

Imperial's Central Biomedical Services (CBS) division has become the first animal care facility within a UK university to be recognised by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC International). CBS has a highly skilled team of animal technicians, who oversee the day-to-day care and welfare of the animals used in research at Imperial. The division has now been officially recognised by AAALAC for the high standard of its care. Read more about this prestigious accreditation.

Travel Grants for Staff: European Union Erasmus+ Programme

Erasmus+ offers the opportunity to undertake a short job-shadowing, networking, training or study visit to a relevant higher education institution or commercial organisation within the European Economic Area (EEA) or Turkey. Since 2012, 62 Imperial employees have participated in the scheme, including technical services staff. If you would like to deepen your knowledge of the sector, share best practice or broaden your awareness of relevant roles in an international context, this could be for you!

The deadline for applications is 11 February 2019 and visits will take place between April and September 2019. Find out more about Erasmus+.

The UK's exit from the EU will not impact on the provision of these grants in 2018-19.
