Welcome to the Sustainable Food Cities newsletter. We are passionate about towns and cities taking a joined up approach to food and want to help public agencies, NGOs, businesses and communities to work together to make healthy and sustainable food a defining characteristic of where they live. If you have news, events or questions for discussion for the newsletter get in touch.
New impulse for the Sustainable Food Cities Network
We are extremely pleased to announce that the Sustainable Food Cities Network has secured funding for a further 3 years starting in December 2016.

We are very grateful to the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation for their support and for the trust they have placed in the project over the past years and for another three to come.

This is a strong recognition of the impact the SFC Network is already having through food, on the health, economy, environment and social fabric across the UK and the potential of cities to drive even more positive change in the years to come. With this new phase we will be able to offer more targeted support to partnerships, more detail will be available in the Autumn.

One of our core aims will be to empower members to take greater ownership of the Network and to fit it ever more closely to their needs. As a first step in this direction we have produced a guide to help you make the most of the Network as of today.

Making the most of the Network

We have produced a one-stop guide on how best to make use of the Network and its resources. Please download this guide to access: members’ contact details, email distribution list, social media, our newsletter, thematic and geographic information search.

As part of our efforts to increase learning exchange across the Network, we have signed up all Network members to the SFC email distribution list (you can unsubscribe at any time by emailing amarceau@soilassociation.org). This list is used for real-time information exchange and allows you to ask questions to the whole Network in one email on any SFC-related topic. There is further information in the guide.

SFC Awards
We are working with a number of cities intending to apply in this year's round of awards. The awards schedule is downloadable here. Since applying for an award takes time and is a facilitated process, if you were hoping to apply in this round it is vital that you get in touch before the end of July. Brexit and the UK food system

The three partner organisations supporting the SFC Network were strongly in favour of a 'remain' vote. Whilst the implications of the Brexit vote on our food system and environmental legislation are yet to be fully understood, a series of studies have been undertaken to help us understand the breadth and depth of these consequences. Letter from 85 orgs stresses importance of food after Brexit

Organisations representing the health and long-term interests of millions of British citizens have called on government to adopt common-sense food, farming and fishing policies that are good for jobs, health and the environment, when they plan for the UK’s exit from the European Union. More info

Durham becomes world's second Sustainable Fish City

Food Durham has successfully coordinated the local Sustainable Fish City campaign to secure pledges covering an astonishing twelve and a half million meals per year.Congratulations Durham! More info

Alexandra Rose searches for new Rose Voucher location

You have until the 27th July to submit your expression of interest form if you think the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg project could be replicated in your town or city. More info

Food Cardiff calls for national action on child holiday hunger

Food Cardiff is urging policy makers to remedy the lack of food provision for children during the summer holidays. Their Summer Holiday Enrichment Programme has received a number of awards and will be rolled out in five local authorities in Wales this summer. More info

Voluntary sugary drinks levy to fund free drinking water

 Children's Health Fund has announced that the £50,000 raised from a voluntary tax on sugary drinks in restaurants across the UK will be used to open water fountains in parks, schools, youth groups and even a BMX club in some of the most deprived areas of the country. More info

London’s first community fridge set to launch

The People’s Fridge is a public fridge where local businesses and residents can leave spare, edible food for those who need it. It will be run by a group of local volunteers and aims to cut food waste, encourage food sharing and help tackle food poverty. More info

Sustainability and Transformation Plans

Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs) have been introduced to help deliver the NHS Five Year Forward View vision of better health and improved NHS efficiency. STPs are place-based, cross-sector, multi-year plans built around the needs of local populations. This may be an opportunity for local food partnerships to contribute to the local health action planning. More info

Biggest organisations in B&H pledge to offer healthier food

Brighton and Hove Food Partnership is very pleased that some of the top organisations in the city serving some 1.4 million meals a month are committing to healthy food. The pledges include being sugar smart and raising a levy on sugary drinks, switching to a healthier vending offer and applying for a Healthy Choice Award. More info

Food Portsmouth pilots Holiday Lunches

The Food Portsmouth partnership will be launching a six week pilot to provide free lunches, on select days, at six adventure playgrounds in a move to ensure that no child goes hungry during the holidays. More info

Parliament launches food waste inquiry

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee has launched an inquiry into the economic, social and environmental impact of food waste in England with a focus on consumers, the retail and hospitality sectors and local government. More info on the call for evidence

EU Call for Proposals - Networks of Towns (UK)

Financial support is available for towns with existing town twinning links to organise conferences and workshops addressing common issues. Grants up to £150k. Deadline 1st September 2016. More info

Community Business Fund Opens for Applications

Power to Change is awarding grants of £50,000-£300,000 from 27th July for community businesses in England reducing social isolation, improving health and well-being, improving local environment. More info

Comic Relief core funding grants

Comic Relief is offering ‘core funding’ that will pay towards the core costs of running an organisation, including salaries, overheads and day-to-day running costs. Up to £40,000, apply before 27th July. More info

Grants for holiday activity clubs serving food

The Children’s Health Fund is offering grants of up to £5,000 for organisations that are running holiday activity clubs with food. A total of 150 applications will be accepted and the Board will be meeting in November to assess and make funding decisions. More info

Vegware Community Fund

The Vegware Community Fund gives monthly support (eco takeaway packaging and donations up to £200) to non-profit sustainability projects. They are currenty taking on new recipients. More info

Farming for the Future - Friends of the Earth new report

This latest report busts three common myths about world hunger and details the science that demonstrates that organic and agroecological farming are fundamental to feeding all people, now and into the future. More info

Food resource pack for children in care

Health Equalities Group & Food Active have produced a brilliant new resource 'Food in Care' that provides a detailed insight into the needs of children in care and the range of food behaviour challenges that might arise. More info

Dignity: Ending Hunger Together in Scotland

Scottish Government takes leadership in digging into the root causes of food poverty and explores means of ending hunger through prevention, crisis management and investing in long term solutions. More info

The Child's Obesity Strategy

The report, published by the RSPH and the Youth Health Movement, asks young people to identify priority actions from food manufacturers, retailers, and the Government to help tackle childhood obesity. More info

Evaluation of food provision during the school holidays

Holiday Kitchen is a programme that offers families learning, food, and play during the school holidays, when many children are vulnerable to experiencing hunger. This report evaluates the outcomes of Holiday Kitchen’s summer 2015 programme. More info

Securing healthy returns from the health sector

New research from the Sustainable Development Unit has calculated the NHS and wider health sector could save up to £414 million and cut 1 million tonnes of carbon emissions by 2020. The research outlines areas that offer potential cash savings and environmental benefits. More info

Food Climate Research Network's 10 Foodbytes

The FCRN has launched a free online learning resource that provides a clear and scientifically robust overview of the many interlinked issues connected to our food system. More info
FCRN and FAO also published an overview of government approaches to developing integrated national dietary guidelines and make recommendations. More info

Footprint Sustainability Index Trends Report 2016

An analysis of the key foodservice and hospitality trends in sustainability, it aims to be the catalyst for shifting sustainability efforts. More info
