Second Sunday in Advent

Isaiah 40:3-4

This Sunday, December 9, marks the second Sunday of Advent - a time of preparation and waiting for the arrival of Christ. Our theme for Advent this year is borrowed from a book by Katie Dawson of the same title: All Earth Is Waiting. (Copies of the book are available in the office.) We will be reminded during the series that Christ comes not just for humanity but for all the earth - indeed for all creation. This Sunday we will look at the theme of Love found in Isaiah 40:3-4 with a sermon title of "Clear the Way." We hope you'll join us this Sunday at 10:30 am for worship during this holy season of the year.

Remember, you can catch up on past sermons here.
Cost of meal is $5 for adults and youth; $2.50 for children

Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by musical programming in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m.

West End MS Warm-Up
We will finish up this ministry opportunity this week!

From now until Dec. 15, we will be partnering with West End Middle Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) to collect warm hats, gloves, scarves, mittens and socks for students in need, boys and girls, age 11-16. About 50% of West End Middle students live at or below the poverty line, and about a dozen families are homeless (in shelters or couch-hopping).  Let's keep our young neighbors warm and cozy this cold winter season!

Look for donation bins in the Fellowship Hall.
Women's Retreat: Jan. 25-27
The women of Blakemore UMC are invited to attend the United Methodist Women's Retreat, co-hosted by the women of Clark Memorial UMC. While some of the details are still being discussed between the two churches, please hold the date in your calendars: January 25-27. This retreat will take place at Montgomery Bell State Park.

Inclement Weather Policy
As the weather starts to get colder, we wanted to take a moment to remind folks of our inclement weather policy:

If MNPS closes schools for inclement weather, the church will also be closed. We will also post to our website and Facebook pages. For inclement weather on Sundays, we will always try to open if possible. Otherwise, we will send a note via e-mail, Facebook, website, or phone call.
Special Request: Acolytes & Children's Sermon
Blakemore family,

You are invited to share your gifts by assisting with the acolytes or by sharing a children's sermon. Serving in these ways is a wonderful way to fulfill the commitment we make to our children at their baptisms, and helps them form new relationships with caring adults in our church family. Please consider signing up for one or more Sundays.

The Spiritual Journeys Conversation serves as a safe place to question, challenge, and pursue our own concept of who or what God is. While there will never be anyone to replace the open-minded, inquisitive leadership of Steve Tippens, we will move forward in his honor. All persons interested in a conversational class on the issues of the day are welcome to join us.

Come, join us for stimulating, thought-provoking conversation. Sundays from 9:30-10:20 a.m in the Library, across from Room 204.  A safe space for open conversation that doesn’t follow traditional teaching scripts and where each participant’s contribution to the conversation is honored.

See you there,
Joe T. Hensley-Templeton

Please join us each Tuesday, beginning at 7:00 p.m. for discussion, light snacks, and fellowship. All are welcome.

The BeMORE Group is an open, inclusive, Reconciling small group that meets weekly to be present for one another, to engage in bible study, and to share life. During worship last Sunday, we introduced the new Adopt A College Student program. We are asking our church family to sign up to support one or more of these students through prayer, cards, gifts, and care packages throughout the next year. We hope you will consider walking alongside our students this year, the bigger support network a student has the better their college experience will be. Show our students how much their home church loves and supports them!

OUTREACH: Project Transformation
Our ministry partner, Project Transformation Tennessee, is now accepting applications for their Summer 2019 intern class! Watch this video to find out more about PT’s unforgettable summer of leadership and service, and forward to a young adult who should apply!

Summer 2019 Intern Applications Open!

We believe that relationships can transform communities. Without relationships, neighbors are disconnected and communities are fractured.

At PT, young adults are part of the solution, bridging the gaps between communities and neighbors.

Our young adults are empowered through meaningful service and leadership, by leading summer day camps for children, living in intentional Christian community, learning from Christ-inspired leaders, exploring faith in action, and representing PT in the community. They work hard—really hard—as they love God and neighbor.

Every Thursday in Room 204 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM

The Blakemore Depression Support Group offers a safe and supportive place for those who are suffering from depression and anxiety.  Many lack a support system where they can openly talk about what is deeply troubling them. This group is an informal setting where there is unconditional acceptance for all, no matter what their situation. Everything said in the group is confidential. The group meets every Thursday evening at Blakemore in Room 204 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

For more info on the group, contact Gayle Lembcke at 615-305-4974 or lembckeg@bellsouth.net.
