Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

1 John 3:16-19

This Sunday, August 19, we continue in our yearly tradition of a worship series called "The Gospel According to Disney." In this fun series, we look at biblical truths and how they connect with Disney movies and our own lives. This week, Nate Partee, our Pastoral Intern, will be preaching from 1 John 3:16-19. Borrowing from the movie Wall-E, which has almost no spoken words, he will explore what it means to live in faith of a God who is beyond words. We hope you'll join us this Sunday at 10:30 am for worship.

Remember, you can catch up on past sermons here.

As college starts back, we want to recognize and congratulate the recipients of scholarships from Blakemore for the 2018-2019 school year. We are proud of our well-deserving recipients: Jaima Bryan, Kaley Bryan, Asia Kabiling, Isobelle Kabiling, and Julia Walker. Please be sure to offer them your congratulations the next time you see them! We wish them all the best as they start a new year in school.

Blakemore is able to offer scholarships through our endowment funds because of the generosity and foresight of others. The Guy and Margaret Smith College Scholarship Fund and Dorothy Knowles Fund were created specifically to provide scholarships for college students. If you are interested in contributing to one of these funds or in establishing a new one, please speak with Pastor John. The selection committee this year was Dr. Henry Moses, Ron Merville, Susan Slater, Pat Pile, and Gayle Lembcke.

The BeMORE small group will not meet this week. We will resume our studies next week, and will move to Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

All are welcome to join us.

Altar Flowers

There are several openings for altar decor in the upcoming months: two in August, one in September, and several others throughout the rest of the year. Decorating the altar with flowers is a wonderful way to honor someone you know and love or to remember someone who has passed away. Information about dedications and memorials appear in the bulletin each week and on the screens in the sanctuary. If you are interested in signing up, please contact the church office or call Patty Tippens.

Interested in providing a snack after worship during our weekly fellowship time? Please consider signing up for Mugs & Hugs. There is one spot open for August and then more beginning in October. Please see Mary Evelyn Cheshier for more information.
Spiritual Journey Conversations

Our Spiritual Journey Conversation (SJC) group engages every Sunday morning in open conversation about some of life’s deeper questions. Right now, we’re talking about our God-concepts – Where do we get our God-concepts?  How do we characterize our God?  Must we have a common understanding of God? In what ways do we fence God in – or out? Are we “theists,” “deists,” “non-theists,” “atheists,” “agnostics,” “pantheists,” “panentheists,” “monotheists,” “polytheists?” Do we know the difference? Does it matter? How does our God-concept influence our world view and our relationship to our world and its inhabitants?

Come, join us for stimulating, thought-provoking conversation. Sundays from 9:30-10:20 in the Library, across from Room 204.  A safe space for open conversation that doesn’t follow traditional teaching scripts and where each participant’s contribution to the conversation is honored.

For more information or to be added to our mailing list, contact Steve Tippens, 615-305-8316, sctippens@bellsouth.net.
