Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-13

The Rio Olympics are underway, and we’re excited here at Blakemore UMC! During the month of August, we are doing an Olylmpics-themed sermon series in worship called “Living Your Passion.” We’ll celebrate the spirit of the Olympic games and the skill and dedication of the athletes as we explore our own God-given passions. This Sunday, August 14, we look at Hebrews 12:1-13 and the theme “It Takes Discipline.” We hope you’ll join us Sunday at 10:30 am!
Membership Sunday
If you have been attending Blakemore UMC for a while and have not yet officially joined the church, you are invited to attend a special lunch in the Fellowship Hall after worship on Sunday, August 28. We'll enjoy some good food together and have an opportunity to ask questions about Blakemore and learn more about church membership. We will then plan to have a group of folks join the church together during worship on Sunday, September 11. To find out more or to reserve a spot, please contact Rev. John Hill at or 615-297-6519.

Our annual Charge Conference will be Monday, September 12, at 6:30 pm. The charge conference is the official yearly meeting for our local church, presided over by our District Superintendent. All are welcome and invited to attend. We will do some official business - such as electing leadership positions for 2017, re-certifying Yiwen Bi as a candidate for ordained ministry, and setting the pastor's salary - as well as celebrating all we have done this past year and looking at the big picture of our common mission and ministry.
Wednesday Night Life resumes tomorrow night with dinner at 5:30 pm and our own Blakemore Olympics beginning at 6:30 pm! This will be a fun, inter-generational event so please plan to bring a friend and have some Olympic-sized fun!

Blakemore UMC and Clark Memorial UMC are seeking to partner together to have conversation about race and faith in our society. With the backdrop of many tragic shootings in the news recently and the controversy surrounding Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives Matter movements, we want to create a space for dialogue between different races and explore how our faith in Christ informs the ways we view and respond to a variety of situations and systemic issues. We still have details to work out, but our first of what will hopefully be a series of weekly conversations will be on Sunday, September 11. We will join our friends at Clark Memorial UMC for lunch following worship and then for a conversation. We have tentatively chosen the new book
The End of White Christian America as a jumping off point for the conversation. We are hoping to have about 8 people from each congregation participate each week. If you are interested, please contact Rev. John Hill.

Reservation forms are available in the church office and should be submitted by Wednesday, September 21, to guarantee room availability.  For more information, contact or

Blakemore's existence depends upon many volunteers.  We are compiling an up-to-date list of those volunteers. Review the list below and submit any corrections, additions or deletions to the church office. You may also volunteer for any of these areas in the same way. We will publish an accurate and current list as soon as possible.  Thanks to every one who has or will volunteer to help in these important responsibilities.     Cavit Cheshier
