Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Psalm 137

For our worship series for July, we are looking at a different Psalm from the Old Testament each week and seeing how these ancient poems still relate to our lives today. Additionally, after the sermon we are each invited to write a short Psalm to share (if you are willing) that will become part of a Blakemore Psalm or collection that we will unveil at the end of the month. This Sunday, we will look at Psalm 137, one of the most intense and jarring passages in the entirety of scripture. Through it, we'll see that we can bring even our most intense anger, hatred, and sorrow to God. We hope you'll join us this Sunday at 10:30 am for worship.

Remember, you can catch up on past sermons here.

If you need to visit the church on these days, please park in the street or at Elmington Park. We will still have WNL on August 1. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to the having the repairs completed.

Back-to-School Sunday

Next Sunday, August 5, we will have a Blessing of the Backpacks during the Children’s Moment. Teachers and students, please bring your backpacks or other bags to worship with you next Sunday. Any children moving to a new Sunday School class for the school year will also begin in their new class next week (see your teacher for more details).

Next Sunday, August 5, we will celebrate Julia Walker as she heads off to UT-Chattanooga. All are invited to add to the basket of necessities for her freshman year and to celebrate Julia during Mugs and Hugs at 11:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall
Altar Flowers

There are several openings for altar decor in the upcoming months: two in August, one in September, and several others throughout the rest of the year. Decorating the altar with flowers is a wonderful way to honor someone you know and love or to remember someone who has passed away. Information about dedications and memorials appear in the bulletin each week and on the screens in the sanctuary. If you are interested in signing up, please contact the church office or call Patty Tippens.

Interested in providing a snack after worship during our weekly fellowship time? Please consider signing up for Mugs & Hugs. There is one spot open for August and then more beginning in October. Please see Mary Evelyn Cheshier for more information.
Accessibility

We have an abundance of accessibility equipment (wheelchairs, crutches, shower chairs, etc.) at the church. If you or someone you know is in need of one of these items, please stop by the church office.
Double Nickel

The July outing for Double Nickel fell through so there will be no OFFICIAL outing in July. The next one will be a trip to the Bluebird Café on August 13th. More details to follow.

Unofficially, John and Kathy Jackson are going to hear the Big Band at Centennial Park on
July 28th, 7:00 pm. Grab your lawn chairs and a picnic dinner and come join us!

The BeMORE small group will again meet on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Deanna McCulley.

We are studying a book called the Sermon on the Mount by Clarence Jordan. Clarence Jordan is the author of the Cotton Patch Gospels.

All are welcome to join us.

Spiritual Journey Conversations

Our Spiritual Journey Conversation (SJC) group engages every Sunday morning in open conversation about some of life’s deeper questions. Right now, we’re talking about our God-concepts – Where do we get our God-concepts?  How do we characterize our God?  Must we have a common understanding of God? In what ways do we fence God in – or out? Are we “theists,” “deists,” “non-theists,” “atheists,” “agnostics,” “pantheists,” “panentheists,” “monotheists,” “polytheists?” Do we know the difference? Does it matter? How does our God-concept influence our world view and our relationship to our world and its inhabitants?

Come, join us for stimulating, thought-provoking conversation. Sundays from 9:30-10:20 in the Library, across from Room 204.  A safe space for open conversation that doesn’t follow traditional teaching scripts and where each participant’s contribution to the conversation is honored.

For more information or to be added to our mailing list, contact Steve Tippens, 615-305-8316, sctippens@bellsouth.net.

The women of Blakemore are encouraged to attend this one day event on August 11 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.), led by Crys Zinkiewicz at the Scarrit Bennet Center. This study explores our own relationship with money, the money choices available to us, and how we indiviudlaly and collectively respond in light of our faith. Cost is $20 (and includes lunch).

For more information on this study, please visit this website. To register, please visit this website.

Every Thursday in Room 204 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM

The Blakemore Depression Support Group offers a safe and supportive place for those who are suffering from depression and anxiety.  Many lack a support system where they can openly talk about what is deeply troubling them. This group is an informal setting where there is unconditional acceptance for all, no matter what their situation. Everything said in the group is confidential. The group meets every Thursday evening at Blakemore in Room 204 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

For more info on the group, contact Gayle Lembcke at 615-305-4974 or lembckeg@bellsouth.net.
