Week 10 Term 1 2016
Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and School Community,

Friday 1st of April provided a fabulous evening of warmth, collegiality and community, with the formal acknowledgement of our 35th Anniversary, the delivery of our Strategic Plan, and the unveiling of our new School Logo.

The plaque was unveiled by Shane Rattenbury, MLA, Minister for Education as our Board Chair, Catherine Prosser and Builder, Ben Jennings, looked on.

From Director of School Administration

Dear CMS families,

Staff at CMS have been delighted to return to school and commented how fast the Term flew by. Anthony and I have enjoyed greeting you all on the first day of the week every week...

Anthony mentioned the National Improvement Tool at the opening of the new building last week ...

Staff meeting structures have developed as we added a meeting to discuss Montessori philosophy in depth...

Members of the primary staff are planning to progress through career stages from graduate to proficient with the Teacher Quality Institute during next Term...

A little reminder on visiting the school…..

The Montessori environment is designed for the children. From the Toddler (Infant Community) to Cycle 1 (The Children’s House) to the world of Cycle 2/3 (Primary), each classroom has furniture of the correct size to accommodate our growing children. Parents and carers are welcome to observe and visit on set days to minimise disruptions to the work cycle.

If your child has forgotten to pack their lunch and you return with it later in the morning, please leave it at the office. Tonia will see to it that any items or messages are delivered to your child in a timely manner.

If you have a reason to be on the premises outside of school start time at 8:30am or pick up time at noon or 3:00pm, please visit the office. Tonia will ensure you are signed in for emergency evacuation purposes and let relevant Directors know of your presence.
Your support with allowing the space to be an undisturbed focused learning time for the children at CMS is much appreciated.

Election of Board Members, 2016

Dear CMS Community,

Thank you to everyone who attended the AGM or sent in their proxies for the night.  The Board is very pleased to see that attendance and interest in the AGMs has been increasing steadily over the last 3 years, and it reflects well on us as a community that we had 9 candidates for only 6 vacant positions.  Our thanks go to all our candidates for stepping up and nominating for these important roles in our community.
We are pleased to welcome back Jacqueline Gellatly, who was re-elected to a third term on the Board.  We are also very much looking forward to working with our five, brand-new Board members; Douglas Amarfio, Jodie Bietzel, Stuart Pascoe, Sam Scott, and Nick Surawski.  The biographies of all our Board members are available here so you can see the full picture of who will be representing your interests in the governance of the School and Society.  If you see any of our new members (or even our old members!) on the path, please do say hello and introduce yourselves.
We held our first meeting of the new Board on April 5, when we invited Andrew Wrigley, the Director of the Association of Independent Schools ACT, to come and give new members an induction into the world of independent school governance, as well as updating all of us on new and ongoing topics of interest in the sector.  At that meeting, as we always do, we also elected the Chair and Deputy Chair roles for the next 12 months, and decided which members will be serving on which committees.  As the first year in our new 10 year Strategic Plan, it will be a busy year for the Board and I’m confident we have a good team to work with.
Kind regards,

Catherine Prosser
Board Chair

Music in Cycle 1 - Do you know what your children have been up to?

In Music specialist classes on Wednesday afternoons this term, the Extended Day Cycle 1 students have learnt about some of the Instruments Of The Orchestra, whilst listening to the music and story of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf

They entered the world of trolls and princes with Grieg’s In The Hall of the Mountain King

Whirling and twirling colourful scarves about whilst singing and dancing to autumn songs about leaves and windy weather has been enjoyed.

To 18 songs and rhymes, the children have sung, danced, stepped, conducted and accompanied with percussion instruments.

They will most likely recall the highlights of the term being the Easter bunny dance and game, and playing Hot Cross Buns on glockenspiels.

Thanks again to those parent volunteers who were able to help at the March Working Bee.

We were able to complete the steps on the slide mound installation and create a great balance beam activity area with the free gum tree segments we received. It’s great to see the kids being challenged each day and enjoying this new play area.

Our next working bee is on April 17th from 8am til 11am.
