In line with the advent of the digital era, maintaining a competitive edge in space related technologies and services is crucial for delivering immense benefits to Australia, for example, environmental monitoring, security and surveillance, communication, agriculture, and healthcare, to name a few. This webinar aims to discuss multi-faceted challenges and opportunities underpinning research, innovation, and commercialisation in the space sector. National and international experts from academic, research and industrial organisations are invited to participate and elucidate state-of-the-art initiatives from various perspectives for advancing and sustaining space capabilities for the betterment of Australia.

Join us at this exciting webinar as we hear from Dr Edward Tunstel, Professor Andy Koronios,
Dr Bhupinder Singh and Dr Anke Pagels.

This webinar will be moderated by Professor Saeid Nahavandi FTSE and Adjunct Professor Dimity Dornan FTSE. The webinar will run for approximately 60 minutes with each speaker providing a presentation to our online audience followed by a Q&A session with the speakers.

Dr Edward Tunstel
Chief Technology Officer at Motiv Space Systems, Inc., USA

Dr. Edward Tunstel received B.S. and M.E. degrees in mechanical engineering from Howard University, Washington, DC and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of New Mexico, USA in 1996. He served as a leader in robotics and autonomy with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for nearly two decades, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory for a decade, and Raytheon Technologies Research Center for several years. He is currently CTO with Motiv Space Systems, Inc.

Professor Andy Koronios
CEO, SmartSat Specialist

Professor Andy Koronios is CEO & Managing Director of the SmartSat CRC. Andy is a professor of information systems and previously held the positions of Dean: Industry & Enterprise and Head of the School of Information Technology & Mathematical Sciences, at the University of South Australia.

Dr Bhupinder Singh
Pilot and Aviation Medicine Specialist

Dr Bhupi Singh specialises in aerospace medicine and is a qualified fighter pilot. He has 35 years of experience in the field of aerospace medicine, including human engineering and acceleration physiology. He has worked with the Indian Air Force, Air India, and the RAAF.  Currently, he is an honorary professor at the Institute of Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation, Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia.

Dr Anke Pagels
Divisional Board Member for Space

Anke Pagels-Kerp was appointed Divisional Board Member for Space in October 2021. She is responsible for the research and development program of DLR’s 22 space research institutes. From 2016 to 2021, she was Head of Space Science Department at the German Space Agency. In this position, she was responsible for the agency’s research program and space program missions in the areas of solar system research and Astronomy/Astrophysics.

Dr Dimity Dornan AO FTSE
Chair, ATSE Industry and Innovation Forum

Dr Dimity Dornan, AO is a bionics advocate, speech pathologist and researcher. In 1992, she established Hear and Say as a leading not-for-profit for deaf children learning to listen and speak, particularly with surgically implantable hearing technology like the bionic ear.

Professor Saeid Nahavandi FTSE
Member, ATSE Industry and Innovation Forum

Professor Saeid Nahavandi is recognised nationally and internationally for his research and contributions in intelligent systems, encompassing robotic and haptic, as well as modelling and simulation technologies. He provides consultancy to governments and industry in Australia, USA, and Europe. He has pioneered novel haptically-enabled robotic and virtual reality systems for use in contested environments and his research has transitioned into products for both civilian and defence applications.
