JULY 2022

From Law Alumni Association President, Daniel S. Newman JD ’91

Dear Alumni:

I am truly honored to serve as the President of the University of Miami Law Alumni Association this year and look forward to seeing our vibrant alumni community participate in events this year. It seems like just yesterday that I was walking on what was then called the “slab,” laughing with friends and discussing what our future legal careers might look like. Today, 31 years later, I still feel the same excitement every time I step on campus. I remember the late nights of studying and nervous energy before midterms and finals. Law school was one of the most memorable times of our lives. We made good friends and created lasting memories.

This is an exciting time to be a Miami Law Alumni. Dean David Yellen officially joined us on July 1, 2022. We want to welcome him to the U and look forward to working with him and the alumni leadership to continue to advance our alma mater’s visibility and prominence.

Miami Law creates leaders. I want to congratulate Gary Lesser, JD '92, on his installation as president of The Florida Bar during the June annual meeting. The night before Gary’s installation, our alumni host committee planned a fantastic reception in honor of his installation. It was terrific to see everyone at the reception and the enthusiasm expressed for our alma mater. At the reception, we also celebrated Marni Lennon, Assistant Dean for Public Interest and Pro Bono, and her colleagues. As a result of their efforts, the Florida Bar Foundation presented Miami Law with a trophy for its first place finish in the 2022 Florida Pro Bono Law School Challenge. The Foundation recognized Miami Law for matching the most alumni with law school students to provide pro bono services in the community. We could not be more proud.

Further, I want to congratulate Deborah Enix-Ross, BA '78, JD '81, the incoming president of the American Bar Association. Deborah will be installed at the ABA’s Annual Meeting in Chicago in August. I want to invite alumni to attend our reception in her honor at the ABA Annual Meeting. In addition, congratulations to DeAnna Allen, JD '96, who will be installed in July as the president of the National Association of Women Lawyers.

As we fully transition back to live events, I invite all alumni to participate in our Homecoming activities. As always, we will hold our annual golf tournament, which this year will be held on November 2, 2022. At the golf tournament, we will honor Lonny Rose for his years of service and accomplishment in building the University of Miami Law School’s preeminent Litigation Skills program. We will also honor UM football legends David Heffernan, AB '85, JD '91, and Alonzo Highsmith, BBA '87, for their athletic efforts on behalf of the U. Three days later, we will meet for our morning spirits and breakfast on November 5, 2022. Please reserve these dates on your calendars and participate.

It is an exciting time for the University of Miami and our alumni. We are in one of the most influential cities in the country. The technology and business communities in Miami continue to grow, placing Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami, and the University of Miami School of Law on a steep upward trajectory.

Please make sure you are a part of all of the activities. Get involved, share your time and talents with us, and become part of the Miami Law Alumni Association community. Finally, I’d like to encourage all of you to contribute to our Ever Brighter Campaign, to the extent you are able. The resources that you provide allow the University of Miami to continue to provide students the opportunity to attend our Alma Mater and to continue to enhance our community. I look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming activities.

Very truly yours,

Daniel S. Newman, JD '91

Create a Brighter Future for Miami Law
The world is changing faster than ever. To meet its challenges and take advantage of existing opportunities, the University of Miami is educating the next generation of bold thinkers, empowering innovative problem-solvers, and training principled and caring leaders who can make the world a better place. To pave the way as we approach our centennial in 2025, we have embarked on an ambitious journey we call Ever Brighter: The Campaign for Our Next Century.

This path towards a brighter future will require investment and partnership from the ’Canes community, and planned gifts—which are a part of one’s financial and/or estate plans—are an essential component of this effort.
Planned gifts are not just beneficial for the University, but they also provide donors with various options for giving in creative and tax-smart ways.
To assist you in taking the first steps to create or update your financial/estate plan, we are pleased to share a short video on our work. We hope it helps you understand the importance of planned gifts to the University of Miami and the resources available through our office. Please

Fellow Canes,

The School of Law is fortunate to have such a strong and faithful alumni community. We are grateful for all of your help and support! As we enter the academic year, we are eager to welcome Dean David Yellen to campus and to work with him to maintain the Law School’s record of excellence and position it for even greater success in the future. Each of us has a role and can contribute meaningfully in this effort.

We are also grateful for your strong support during the Ever Brighter Campaign: The Campaign for our Next Century. Through your support, I am very pleased to report that to date we have obtained $43M in gifts, pledges and bequests. The success of our campaign depends on your support, and I hope to work with you to ensure that the coming year we exceed all expectations!

The Ever Brighter Campaign is a commitment to excellence, progress and advancement. I invite you to join us in supporting our alma mater this year. One way you can do that is to join the Dean’s Circle, which also gives you many other benefits.

Miami Law plays an important and irreplaceable role in our community. Together with all of you, we can help the school continue to attract top talent to the student body and faculty, improve our physical campus, and support other programs and initiatives. Through our continued engagement, we enrich the school with our experiences and perspectives.

Please reach out to me or the Law Alumni Office at any time if we can help you in any way.
