NOVEMBER 2022

From Law Alumni Association President, Daniel S. Newman JD ’91

Dear Alumni:

It is hard to believe Fall has arrived and Alumni Weekend & Homecoming is just around the corner. The excitement among the faculty, students and alumni is palpable as we return to in-person events and gatherings.

Dean David Yellen officially joined us on July 1 and hit the ground running. We continue our outreach efforts to introduce him to law firms, community leaders and alumni.  The Dean has made it a priority to meet as many in our community as he can, so please let us know if you are interested in having Dean Yellen visit your law firm or business.

I invite you to come home and celebrate Homecoming with us. Return to campus to reconnect with alumni and friends, reminisce about the past, and experience all that is happening at Miami Law today. It’s what this weekend is all about.

Here is the School of Law’s Homecoming lineup, you can see the full details and register here, to see all that is happening at the university, click here

It is an exciting time for the University of Miami and our alumni, and I invite you to share the excitement with us.  Get involved and become a part of the Miami Law Alumni Association Community.

Thanks to the generosity of our board and fundraising committee members, our alumni, and so many others, the School of Law’s Ever Brighter Campaign has made great progress toward our goal. And, I am confident that with continued support we will not only reach that goal but exceed it come 2025 when the campaign concludes. I also want to thank those who supported the School of Law on Giving Day – the school met its goal of 100 unique donors (we had 173, 95 more than last year), we ranked #7 overall and #4 amongst UM schools and colleges. Amazing work!

This has been a year of transition for our law school and in particular the Development and Alumni Relations office. I take this opportunity to thank Brittany Kegley for her six plus years of friendship and support to our Law Alumni Association, as she will be taking on a new role in Austin, TX, where she moved over a year ago.  She will be missed by all of us. Additionally, Georgie Angones will be transitioning to a new position with the School of Law as Assistant Dean for Alumni and Community Relations.  I am delighted that she will continue to work with our Law Alumni Association to strengthen the ties with our community.

I also want to recognize and celebrate a new appointment; Amy Perez was recently named Assistant Dean of the Office of Career and Professional Development.  We encourage all of you to reach out to her and assist her in her placement efforts – these opportunities truly help shape our students and alumni.

Finally, for me and my family, Thanksgiving is a special time of year. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.

Very truly yours,

Daniel S. Newman, JD '91

Create a Brighter Future for Miami Law:
Join the Heritage Society

The world is changing faster than ever. To meet its challenges and take advantage of existing opportunities, the University of Miami is educating the next generation of bold thinkers, empowering innovative problem-solvers, and training principled and caring leaders who can make the world a better place. To pave the way as we approach our centennial in 2025, we have embarked on an ambitious journey we call Ever Brighter: The Campaign for Our Next Century.

This path towards a brighter future will require investment and partnership from the ’Canes community, and planned gifts—which are a part of one’s financial and/or estate plans—are an essential component of this effort. Planned gifts are not just beneficial for the University, but they also provide donors with various options for giving in creative and tax-smart ways.

Please
click here or email Georgie Angones at gangones@law.miami.edu to learn how we can help you think about your legacy gift and how you can impact the future through the University of Miami.
Fellow Canes,

The School of Law is fortunate to have such a strong and faithful alumni community. We are grateful for all of your help and support! As we enter the academic year, we are eager to welcome Dean David Yellen to campus and to work with him to maintain the Law School’s record of excellence and position it for even greater success in the future. Each of us has a role and can contribute meaningfully in this effort.

We are also grateful for your strong support during the Ever Brighter Campaign: The Campaign for our Next Century. Every gift, pledge, and bequest moves us closer to achieving our goal. The success of our campaign depends on your support, and I hope to work with you to ensure that the coming year we exceed all expectations!

The Ever Brighter Campaign is a commitment to excellence, progress and advancement. I invite you to join us in supporting our alma mater this year. One way you can do that is to join the Dean’s Circle, which also gives you many other benefits.

Miami Law plays an important and irreplaceable role in our community. Together with all of you, we can help the school continue to attract top talent to the student body and faculty, improve our physical campus, and support other programs and initiatives. Through our continued engagement, we enrich the school with our experiences and perspectives.

Please reach out to me or the Law Alumni Office at any time if we can help you in any way.

Go Canes!
