IDA B THE QUEEN IS OUT JANUARY 26

Dear Readers,

It's been incredible to see the progress in places like Georgia when it comes to representation in this country. At the same time, it reminds me how much we still need to do in order to continue my great-grandmother's fight for equality and justice. I hope we can celebrate our victories while also acknowledging the unfinished work before us.

There's a lot that I wish I knew about my great-grandmother, but the things that I do know are a source of inspiration. She believed that she deserved the best. She didn't let others define her. She approached life with defiance and confidence, and it makes me think that I can too.

BEYOND THE BOOK

The Ida B Wells Monument in Chicago is scheduled to be completed this year, right down the street from her home. After thirteen years of being involved in this project, I can't believe we're so close. In 2018, Congress Parkway was renamed Ida B Wells Drive, and a year later a historical marker was installed to honor the Ida B Wells Homes community. The monument will only further serve to celebrate her legacy and impact in the city of Chicago.

In Memphis, there are efforts to build an Ida B Wells statue on Beale Street, near the site of her old printing press. She'll also be included in the Memphis "Equality Trailblazers" monument set to be unveiled later this year, and in a DC suffrage monument alongside Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, and other suffragists.
