A city should reflect the needs of its society—and good design is how we make that happen. It should be seen and used everywhere in a city to benefit and inspire as many people as possible. This year is a very special and exciting year for Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC). We are celebrating our 20th anniversary. It has been uplifting to see how far we have come, and how we have fostered the positioning of Hong Kong as a true Design City—and we know the best is yet to come.

The global Covid-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to students and teachers around the world. At Learning & Teaching Expo (LTE) 2021, Asia’s leading education expo and Hong Kong’s annual signature event, education experts and school leaders were invited by Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) to share their insights into how design thinking may be the solution to this challenge.

Collaboration ignites possibilities. At the end of 2021, one such collaboration dominated the social media feeds of the city’s creative influencers. W Hong Kong joined forces with fashion designers and DIP alumni, SOMEWHERE NOWHERE, to deliver a truly unique staycation experience, the ‘Style-cation-Mode Series’.

Green @ Community – Recycling Stores | Environmental Protection Department, The HKSAR Government (Hong Kong)

The new community recycling network provides more than 130 collection points for at least 8 common types of recyclables in all 18 districts. Their standard recycling receptacles fit various sizes of the recyclables, and are easily recognisable in different colours. With ‘Green’ as the concept, its logo design is consistent with the prefix ‘G’, and features the homophonic number ‘6’ in Cantonese. The visual identity signifies the meaning of going green in an endless cycle.

Design thinking helps us devise innovative solutions through a human-centred approach and encourages us to think out of the box, yet it takes time to learn and master. Our Institute of Design Knowledge has developed a new Divergence Game Kit – a fast-paced storytelling game designed to help you grasp the design thinking process through friendly gameplay. Just follow our simple instructions to unleash your imagination and learn the ropes of design thinking.
