We were very pleased to see 38 attendees for our golf & banquet event in June, especially after 3-year hiatus.

1. Consumer fears over food shortages and climate change escalate: Mintel study


Consumer fears over climate change have escalated around the globe over the last year. According to new research from the 2022 Mintel Consulting Sustainability Barometer, the number of global consumers citing climate change as a top three environmental concern has risen from an average of 39 to 46 percent between 2021-22.

2. UBC scientist is sending yeast and algae to space on Artemis


The University of British Columbia pharmaceutical sciences professor Dr. Corey Nislow is sending yeast and algae cultures into space, in a pod not much bigger than a shoebox, to study the effects of cosmic rays and near zero gravity on living organisms. The project could help design better treatments for future space travellers and for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

3. Food production in hostile environments: an Earth shot with a Mars rebound


A future food system to support life on Mars has equal relevance to producing food in hostile environments. The current global food production system needs to adapt and innovate in response to climate change, depletion of natural resources and increasing urbanisation. Many of the solutions to these food security challenges require an approach that is applicable to hostile environments on Earth as well as in space.
