In Memory: Fury 

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Fury, our 'village pup' (or Canis africanis) that came to us from one the local villages in May last year. CLZ had been training Fury to become a tracking/detection dog and to join the Lower Zambezi Dog Unit. Fury was doing really well and showed good potential, especially in her tracking abilities. Tragically, after a week of severe symptoms of paralysis in her hind legs, it was established that Fury had a worm in her spinal cord - a very rare but fatal condition. 

We would like to acknowledge Dr Liza Oparaocha at Showgrounds Vet and all involved who gave all their time and expertise free of charge. Fury will be sorely missed at CLZ and in the Lower Zambezi Dog Unit. 

                               New Plane Engine

CLZ's Cessna 172 9J-CLZ, our 'eyes in the sky', has been due for an engine refurbishment. The new engine was fitted this month after the plane hours on the old engine were used up and has since been running well. The plane provides a unique line of defence and rapid response to reports of illegal activity in our area – it is estimated that these aerial patrols discover 30% of all poaching activities detected in the Park and GMAs.

                 Mbeli Women's New Sewing Machine
This month the ladies group supported by CLZ received their new pedal sewing machine! The machine was sponsored by Kathleen Gulley and family from the US. The Gulley family visited Mugurameno in July last year and spent some time with the Mbeli women. The group will receive training and then utilise their new skills to make uniforms for the local school as well as souvenirs for lodges.
