ILSI Southeast Asia Region Conference Proceedings: The Gut, its Microbes and Health: New Knowledge and Applications for Asia 

The human being is a complex entity, involving interaction between microbes and the human host. In October 2014, ILSI SEA Region held a Conference on The Gut, Its Microbes and Health: Knowledge and Applications in Asia to promote the understanding of intestinal microbiome and its implications for health and disease, particularly among Asian populations. Knowledge gaps and implications for research to further understand the Asian gut microbiome were discussed. The conference proceedings has been accepted for publication in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition.


Mini - Symposium on “The New Frontier: Diet, Microbiome and Health” 
May 26, 2016, CRC Auditorium, NUS, Singapore

ILSI SEA Region had co-organized a 2.5-hour mini symposium with the Clinical Nutrition Research Centre on May 26, 2016, discussing on the interactions of diet, microbiome and bone health, as well as reviewing the Asian microbiota profile among different Asian population. It concluded with the experts emphasizing the new frontier, where methodological advances can provide more insights to the interactions of the diet, human gut microbiome and health. More information on the mini symposium including the summary report and presentation slides can be accessed here.


The Metabolic Role of Gut Microbiota in the Development of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Cardiovascular Disease  

There has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes and obesity, worldwide over the last decades. New sequencing techniques have revealed the complexity in the microbiome and led to the identification of probable genes in the gut microbiome-host interaction. The authors of the paper published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences have provided such evidence linking gut microbiota and metabolic diseases, particularly the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying this association. The full article can be viewed here


Vegetarian Diets and Gut Microbiota: Important Shifts in Markers of Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease  

Vegetarian diets have been associated with a lower incidence of several chronic diseases risk, mainly due to the improvement of metabolic parameters. A review, published in Nutrition Reviews, examines the modulation of human metabolism and gut microbiota by vegetarian and omnivorous dietary patterns and explores how this modulation may affect the risk of cardiovascular disease. The full article can be accessed here

Nature InSight: Intestinal Microbiota in Health and Disease

A Supplement, Nature Insight (Vol. 535 No. 7610 pp 47-103), was published in July 2016 in Nature focusing on Intestinal microbiota in health and disease. As the intestinal microbiota is associated closely with health and disease, this Insight explored on various topics including: human developmental biology from a microbial perspective; the microbiota and adaptive immunity; and how the microbiota and pathogenic bacteria interact in the gut. The full supplement can be accessed here

Diversity in Gut Bacterial Community of School-Age Children in Asia.

Asia differs substantially among and within its regions populated by diverse ethnic groups, which maintain their own respective cultures and dietary habits. A study was conducted under the Asian Microbiome Project initiated by the Asian Federation of Societies for Lactic Acid Bacteria (AFSLAB) to address the diversity in their gut microbiota. The experts had characterized the bacterial community in fecal samples obtained from school-age children in five Asia countries. The microbiota profiled were classified into two enterotype-like clusters, Prevotella and Bifidobacterium/Bacteroides of which a significant pattern can be observed. The full article is published on Scientific Reports and is available here
