Africa is the world’s fastest growing mobile broadband market

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) projects that 55% of the world's 2.3 billion mobile-broadband subscriptions will be in the developing world by the end of 2014. Double-digit mobile-broadband subscription growth rates have been observed in all regions across the globe but Africa stands out with a projected 43% growth rate by the end of 2014 - the highest globally and twice that of Asia and the Pacific. Africa has also shown a tremendous increase in mobile-broadband penetration - rising from 2% in 2010 to 19% in 2014.
Africa’s growing mobile-broadband market has triggered an increase in demand for smartphones. In 2013,  smartphones accounted for 18% of the overall African mobile phone market's volume and this figure is expected to double by 2017. Furthermore, Frost & Sullivan estimate that smartphone usage in Sub-Saharan Africa will surge by 40% each year until 2017. As a result, technology companies like Microsoft, Huawei, Intel, Lenovo together with African companies like Safaricom and MTN are developing low cost smartphones for the African market.
