India's sex workers win new rights, but still fear police violence

A long-awaited ruling by India's Supreme Court has expanded the rights of sex workers by defining prostitution as a profession, ordering an end to police violence and affirming health and labor protections introduced during coronavirus lockdowns.

What an exciting week for sex workers around the world! Apart from India expanding the rights of sex workers, Belgium has also finally decriminalised sex work.
Besides providing more legal protection against violence and abuse, decriminalisation also signifies recognition of sex work as a profession, sex workers' rights of work, their better control on their work and access to resources in the society.
Though it is still a long way to bring sex work to complete equality, we believe that decriminalisation is still a first and crucial step towards the ultimate goal.
