January 2020

WGC Donors and Friends,

2019 was a year of impact and meaning ... and we are moving forward with plans for another terrific year in 2020 - just take a look at this eNewsletter to get a sense of what's already going on this year!

We will continue to bring people together with common interests to learn about issues impacting our community and to fund programs that benefit women and girls in Howard County.

How will we do this?

  • By giving grants to nonprofits in Howard County that focus on our mission to empower women and girls.

  • By raising money from donors to support our grantmaking and having an endowment so that we will have money in perpetuity to fund programs that benefit women and girls.

  • By hosting events and programs to engage donors and raise money to support our grantmaking.

Please note these upcoming WGC-related 2020 dates and events - this list will continue to be updated and can be found on our website:

You will find additional information about these dates and events within the eNewsletter.

As part of the Howard County community for over 19 years, we have raised over $1 million to support our efforts from over 1,000 donors, and have given over 150 grants to nonprofits that support women and girls in our community.

And we’ll do this together – as a Giving Circle. It takes all of us investing our time, talent, and financial resources in various ways to ensure we are having an impact. We hope our 2019 efforts have inspired you as much as it has all of us – it fuels us to continue working together to support women and girls in our community this year in 2020.

Perhaps, it’s needed now more than ever.

Thank you - I invite you to continue supporting the WGC and look forward to seeing you throughout the year!

WGC Grants

WGC is Proud to Fund Girl Power 2020!
The WGC is proud to fund this amazing program again this year: JHU Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) hosts Girl Power, a STEM expo for middle and high school girls, with support from the Maryland Space Business Roundtable and the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County.

There is no registration required. Girl Power 2020 is scheduled for March 15, 2020, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The event features hands-on activities, cool demonstrations, and take-home material for the girls to encourage an interest in STEM careers. Girls have the opportunity to talk to professional women in STEM careers such as aerospace, computer science, electrical engineering, geology, information technology, and space mission engineering.

Last year Girl Power attracted over 700 elementary and middle school students for a crowd of 1,100+ . We are honored to be a long-time sponsor of this wonderful #STEM event for girls! #womenshistorymonth #girlpower
WGC is Proud to Fund Journey 2020!

The WGC is proud to fund Journey again this year! Journey Camp for Girls, or “Journey” is a week-long camp for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls in Howard County, MD that is run by Maryland Leadership Workshops and conceived of and funded by the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County.

The idea behind Journey is to bring girls in their formative years together to learn about leadership, empowerment, and community. At Journey each student identifies her own leadership skills, strengths, and challenges in a supportive and fun environment that fosters self-esteem and confidence.

Journey 2020 will be held July 12-July 18 at Washington College:
  • Tuition for Journey is $995, including a $100 deposit with the application
  • Financial assistance is made available by the WGC

WGC's Recent Efforts

WGC Advisory Board Continues DEI Work
Members of the WGC Advisory Board are continuing to read and discuss the book "Waking Up White" as we begin our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work. The reading and discussion of this book is a first step in our overall DEI efforts, which is part of WGC's Impact 2024 campaign, where we will be enhancing our core values to better meet our mission by implementing a diversity, equity and inclusion lens to WGC's work - under the leadership of WGC DEI Committee Co-Chairs Hina Naseem and Judy Smith. This will be a meaningful and important journey for the WGC, and we look forward to WGC donors joining us. Learn more here.

WGC's Emergency Response Network (ERN)

This month we sent an Emergency Response Network request that raised $800 in less than an hour to help a woman in need in our community. Last year we sent 7 ERN requests that raised $6,385 to help women. The WGC's Emergency Response Network was created in response to the desire of many women to provide direct support to other women in need - and WGC donors have done just that by supporting women identified by our nonprofit partner agencies who serve women and girls in Howard County. Thank you!
