October 2016

Dates are to be confirmed, but if you are interested in any of the below seminars, please register your interest now by phoning 434 7944 or emailing traceyc@mckenzieca.co.nz. The seminars will be of short duration and followed by a question and answer time.

GST - Property Sale & Purchase

This seminar is designed as a refresher on the GST treatment of land transactions, in particular the preparation of Sale & Purchase Agreements.

We will also look at the application of the Bright-line Test on residential property transactions. The topic will be particularly relevant to the Real Estate Sales and legal fraternity.

Tax Consequences of the Unexpected

Life is full of unexpected events, or expected events with uncertain timing.
These may be business or personal events that have tax implications that to some extent can be mitigated. We will look at events such as death, relationship, family and business breakdowns/disputes.

Rest Home Subsidies

We will look at the current interpretation of rules around establishing financial position for assessing eligibility, what's in and what's out. This will be particularly relevant to those holding assets in family trusts.

Software Update

Our software gurus will present an overview on BankLink, Cashmanager RURAL, Xero and Figured.

These presentations will be followed by workshops where you can have your own queries resolved in relation to the specific packages. This is not a sales exercise, it is designed to provide simple, practical advice.

Change in office location for Janelle

You may have worked with Janelle Shaw in our office. Janelle has the opportunity to be involved in a family business in her home town of Twizel.

While this means a change in Janelle's physical location, she will retain her existing client base working remotely from Twizel with regular days here in the office.
Do you work in the construction or hospitality sectors?

In a previous newsletter we advised that Inland Revenue are using sophisticated benchmarking software to continue their crackdown on 'cashies'. Their focus is on undeclared cash in the construction and hospitality sectors. A marketing campaign advertising IRD's focus is due to hit Christchurch this month with other areas to follow soon after.

If you are in the situation of having under-reported or unreported income, now is a great time to straighten it all out. We want to help you make sure your returns are accurate and timely and, as far as possible, help you avoid penalties and the pain of having tax owing.
Have you got a blue financial records folder?

We have found that over the years that if annual accounts and GST return information is presented in a consistent manner, it enables us to be more efficient and cost effective. If you don't have one, please see Jennie or Fleur in our office.
