January 2014 Heinlein Society News and Updates:
The Heinlein Society

Blood Drive - Arisia, January 17-20, 2014

Friday instead of Sunday at Arisia 2014!: Just an early heads up that Children's Hospital has dropped Sundays from their mobile unit availability, and we're going to try front ending them on Friday afternoon and evening instead. Tentative schedule is 2p-7p on Friday with them, and perhaps a greater spread in the hours for the MGH buses on Saturday, 9a-5p or even 9a-6p.

More info and donor signups at the Arisia website. Stop by, donate, and Pay It Forward!

Heinlein For Heroes Passes 1000 Books Sent!

WE NEED YOU to contact your regional VA Medical Centers, hospitals and clinics, to query whether they would like to receive new hardcover Heinleins - donated by the Heinlein Prize Trust - for their permanent library collections. We have a good resource, Operation Paperback, for book requests from our active duty troops who specifically want paperbacks, but are seeking to expand our reach. Contact: h4h@heinleinsociety.org with the contact and mailing info.

Jan. 7th – H4H received a new address list from Operation Paperback.  We have 54 new addresses to ship to as we continue the program into 2014.
Dec. 23rd – The following is a thank you from the Dayton VA Medical Center.
Dear Members: On behalf of the Veterans, families, and staff of the Dayton VA Medical Center, I wish to extend our sincere appreciation to you for your donation of books. Your thoughtfulness reflects the concern that you feel for our Veterans and for the sacrifices they incurred while in service to our country. Your contribution makes it possible for us to enhance the care we provide our Nation’s heroes, the Veteran patient.
Dec. 11th – The following is a message from a big supporter of the H4H program.  “I owe RAH for inspiring me (I re-read Starship Troopers every year on my birthday). I love the idea of ‘paying it forward’ generally but especially to our Servicemen and women. When I was actively serving I would, on occasion, give promising Soldiers copies of Starship Troopers and solicit their reactions.” Shepard B. Stone, MPS, PA, FAHA, DFAAPA, Brigadier General,
United States Army (Retired)

We also thank those who donated their Virginia Edition holiday purchase discount to Heinlein For Heroes:
Sean Brannon, Rob Hays, Helen McBride, Malcolm Weir, Cary Thomas, and David Sears! Thanks also to the Virginia Edition Publishing Company for their support, and we wish them well with Science Deck, their new technical space science publishing branch!

Your continued support of books is needed! Please send good quality Heinlein paperbacks, and other science fiction novels to:

We were sad to learn of the passing of Pamela Somers, December 22, 2013. Pam was a very active, long-time member of the Heinlein Society, serving as treasurer and membership coordinator for many years. More about Pam here...

New "RAH and Me" Article

Heinlein For Heroes has it all, a way to pay forward my inspiration for becoming a writer and one of the greatest influences of my life, pay back the men and women who have volunteered to put their lives on the line for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, look for books at garage sales, and hang out with new and old friends.
